This slab of white marble is dedicated to those who face suffering and misery. Climb the stairs to reach the Memorial of Auschwitz, a stone symbol memorializing the Holocaust. Other sculptures and works of art on the grounds include a bronze sculpture named *Interpenetration*, which plays on themes of expansion and contraction, and the *Rights of Man*, which depicts a circle of human figures. Other key institutions in this district include the European Court of Human Rights, which has ruled on some of the most important legal cases in the continent’s history. Look for a piece of the old Berlin Wall on the lawn beside the Palace of the Rights of Man. This part of the wall has the word “freiheit" (freedom) inscribed on it. The European Quarter is in the northwest of Strasbourg. Some of the buildings offer guided tours for free check ahead online to reserve a place.
