Strasbourg’s location right in the middle of Europe makes it easily accessible by car from a few major cities. The city is connected to the French motorway system by the Strasbourg-Mulhouse route, while motorways connecting to Hamburg, Milan, Frankfurt and Basel are within a 15-minute drive of the city.
There are plenty of international car hire firms close to Strasbourg Station. Most of these companies also have desks in Strasbourg Airport’s arrivals lounge, so you can rent a car or pick you your pre-booked car as soon as you step off a plane.
Most of Strasbourg’s centre is pedestrianized, and many of the city’s car parks are close to bus and tram stations to encourage you to use the public transport system. As many locals use public transport or ride bicycles in the centre, there is rarely a problem with congestion, though rush hour on the city’s surrounding motorways can be busy.
Hiring a car is one of the best ways to explore the Alsace and get to popular attractions such as the Vosges Mountains and the Europa-Park theme park across the border in Germany. If you plan on crossing the border, check that your hire car’s insurance is valid for driving in Germany. If you choose to stay in France, there are many quintessentially Alsatian towns to explore with your hire car within a 30-minute drive of Strasbourg, including historic Haguenau and the wine town of Marlenheim.
