Away from the towns, the beach lies in a quiet and secluded spot in front of a mountainous peninsula. Lay a blanket on the sand to enjoy a picnic with the soothing sounds of the waves as your musical accompaniment.
Enjoy the space and silence and forget your troubles in this sandy haven. Bring snorkeling and diving gear to explore the clear waters of the Gulf of California. Santa Maria Bay is part of a protected marina area that is filled with colorful fish. Go swimming with your kids in the calm sea and look back at the horseshoe-shaped strand.
Spot the array of boats in the water and admire the mountain rising from the curved peninsula at the southern end of the beach. This area is even quieter and more secluded than the neighboring Playa el Chileno on the coastal corridor. Since the beach has few amenities, bring your own drinks, sunscreen and watersports equipment.
Follow the black path through the beach to appreciate coastal views from a variety of angles. Stay a few nights in the resort at the back of the beach and use the swimming pools or sunbathe with a cocktail.
The beach is less crowded on weekday mornings than at other times. Cruise ships carrying vacationers arrive in the region in the afternoons and on weekends. Note that the beach has a Blue Flag certification, with disabled access and patrolling lifeguards.
Santa Maria Beach is on the coastal corridor running between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Drive north from the heart of Cabo for 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) to get here in roughly 15 minutes. Drop off your car in the parking lot. While in the area, stop at Playa el Chileno, Cabo del Sol Golf and Playa el Tule.
