Bei der Basilika handelt es sich um eine der vier Papst Basiliken Roms. Sie gehört zum exterritorialen Besitz des Heiligen Stuhl und ist eine der sieben Pilgerkirchen Roms. Der erste Bau stammt von Kaiser Konstantin aus dem Jahre 324. In der Folgezeit wurde die Kirche, die über dem vermeintlichen Grab des Apostel Paulus stehen soll, ständig vergrößert und ausgebaut. Seit dem 7 Jhd befindet sich in Skt Paul eine Benediktinerabtei. Über den Säulen des Langschiffes befinden sich 265 Medaillons mit dem Konterfei aller Päpste. Zusätzliche Information: Der Anfang dieses Jahrtausend gefunden 2,4 m lange Sarkophag wurde mit einer endoskopischen Sonde untersucht. Man fand Stoffrest und menschliche Knochen aus dem ersten oder zweiten Jhd n. Chr. Bei dem Stoff habe er sich um purpurnes Leinen mit Goldauflage und blauen Fetzen gehandelt. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass es sich wirklich um den 67 hingerichtete Märtyrer handelt, ist also sehr hoch. (Quelle www.theology.de) The Basilica is one of the four basilicas of the Pope in Rome. It belongs to the extraterritorial possession of the Holy See and is one of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. The first building was built by the Emperor Constantine in the year 324th. In the following period, the church, which is supposed to be above the grave of the apostle Paul, constantly increased and expanded. Since the 7th century a Benedictine abbey is located in Skt Paul.
