Plaza Nueva is a mid 19th-century neoclassical square in the heart of Bilbao's old quarter. This vast plaza is framed by columns and arches and lined with inviting bars and restaurants. Such is its popularity that it is also known as the true agora, or public place of the old town. Enjoy the architecture and dine on local specialties.
Start with a wander around the square to look at the attractive sandstone buildings and then find a seat in one of the bars or restaurants. Try a few of the pinxtos. These are similar to tapas dishes and come in a variety of forms and flavors. Be sure to come by the square on Sundays for the weekly flea market. Scan the stalls for second-hand books and records, art, antiques, coins, stamps and much more.
If you are here on December 21 visit St. Thomas's Market which is spread among the streets surrounding the square. Thousands of shoppers browse the stalls for local farm produce while being entertained by street musicians playing Basque music. At other times of the year, Plaza Nueva hosts a number of festivals.
Take advantage of your time in the old town to visit its other attractions. As it is a compact quarter they are easy to get to on foot. Walk along narrow streets that are hundreds of years old and shop in the many independent stores. Explore the oldest building in the city, Santiago Cathedral. It is dedicated to St, James the patron saint of Bilbao. Tour the Church of San Antón, another ancient religious structure. Pick up insights into local history at the Archeological Museum and the Basque Museum. Watch a show at the Arriaga Theater, a neo-Baroque venue from the late 19th century.
Plaza Nueva is located in the old town. For a fee you can leave your car in the parking garage just outside the historical district or come by public transportation.
