The best area to stay in Obidos is within the historic walled town itself. This offers the most convenient and authentic experience.

The walled town is relatively small and compact, easily explorable on foot. Its main street, Rua Direita, runs from the Porta da Vila (the main entrance gate) up to the castle, and is lined with whitewashed houses, small shops selling local crafts and ginjinha (cherry liqueur), and cosy restaurants. The town is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and cobblestone streets.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will particularly enjoy staying inside the walls. The evenings are particularly special, with fewer day-trippers and the town beautifully lit, offering a quiet and intimate atmosphere. For those who prefer a bit more space or are travelling with more luggage, there are also appealing options just outside the main gate, Porta da Vila. These accommodations often offer easier car access and parking, while still being only a short walk into the historic centre.

The best time to visit Obidos is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

During these months, the weather is typically mild and sunny, making it ideal for exploring the medieval town on foot. You'll find the cobbled streets and historic walls less crowded than in the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience. This is especially good for couples looking for a romantic and tranquil getaway.

For those interested in experiencing local culture and festivities, June is a particularly good month as it hosts the Medieval Market. This annual event transforms the town into a bustling recreation of medieval life, complete with costumed performers, traditional crafts, and historical re-enactments. While it can be busier, it offers a unique and memorable experience.

If your priority is warm weather and lively events, July and August are also good, though you should expect more visitors and higher temperatures.
