Weymouth's Victorian-era fort has transformed from the town's first line of defence into one of the area's most popular spots for a fun-filled day out.

Nothe Fort, a three-tiered fortification on a raised promontory next to Weymouth Harbour, is an unmistakable landmark in the region. Learn about military history and World War II in its museum, which is mostly set in a labyrinth of subterranean passageways.

Originally commissioned in 1872 to protect the increasingly important naval base in Portland, the fort is built on three levels to make its defenses formidable. Explore the lower level, where gunpowder and shells were kept and the middle level, which held heavy cannons. Soldiers once fired muskets and smaller guns from the top rampart. In World War II, its proximity to France made it a strategic site for the Royal Navy once more.

Go underground to the network of corridors that cut into the hillside. Most of the fort is hidden in these tunnels. Illuminating displays show the history of defence in the area and provide lots of information about World War II through detailed models and authentic memorabilia. Head back up to the surface for a walk around the perimeter of the site, enjoying views of the Jurassic Coast.

Hear the boom of cannon fire at the Nothe Fort Artillery during military displays, which are held on alternating Sundays throughout the year. Marvel at the detail of the volunteers’ Victorian military uniforms and cover your ears for the loud bangs as they fire guns from the 19th century.

Come back at night for a ghost tour in what's said to be one of the spookiest locations in the United Kingdom. Listen for the whistling gunner and stay alert to see the white figure who wanders the parapets. A number of different groups organise these ghoulish events. Find out more about them at the fort.

Nothe Fort is in central Weymouth, just south of the main beach, with ample parking for anyone driving here.
