Hokkaido is known for producing some of Japan’s finest seafood and there’s no better place to try it than this famous Nijo “Ichiba” (market). The huge market is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to shop for fresh and prepared fish. Even if you don’t usually eat seafood, it’s worth taking a stroll through this market just to enjoy the busy atmosphere. The market is home to more than 50 stands, which are found both indoors and outdoors, across an area the size of a city block. The traditional market was established in the early 1900s and many of its shops have been in existence for more than a century as well. The vendors sell everything from crabs and sea urchins, to scallops and shellfish. Stroll down the north and east streets, where stalls are decorated with nets and lights, adding to the market’s maritime charm. Venture into the market’s narrow alleyways and admire the care with which the vendors have arranged their seafood on glistening piles of ice. There are some restaurants sandwiched between the stalls, so sit down for a Japanese meal of fresh seafood. One of the sections with restaurants is called Noren Yokocho and the best time to visit this district is in the morning, when you can enjoy a breakfast of donburi. This well-known and tasty dish consists of fresh seafood, such as crab, squid and salmon, served on a bowl of rice. Try your luck at good-natured haggling. In contrast to most shopping venues in Japan, bargaining is considered acceptable here. Although few vendors speak English, many merchants have pictures of their products to assist in overcoming the language barrier. Many of the merchants can even ship boxes of frozen seafood to your home country upon your return. Nijo Market is open daily, but shops have individual opening and closing hours and days. (503 reviews) Stayed for 2 nights with a family of 3\. Facilities such as washer dryer were sufficient as there were 3 dryers and 3 washers on 2 levels. The Onsen was great with the outdoor and indoor pools as well as a cold pool and a sauna. Clean and well-maintained. There’s paid parking at the hotel that opens at 3pm aligned with check in timing. Convenience stall just a few steps away. From the hotel, we could walk to Odari Park. Japanese breakfast arranged by the hotel was excellent and I think guests should give it a try. Overall good stay, great vibes. (1,002 reviews) Our stay had a few positives, but several issues left us genuinely frustrated. The room size was good, but the fact that the temperature can’t be individually controlled is inconvenient and frankly surprising for a hotel of this level. It’s not something that ruined the stay, but it absolutely affected our comfort. The lounge experience was the most disappointing. On our first visit, the table lamp at our seating area didn’t work, which made the space feel poorly maintained. On our second visit, we picked up a complimentary non-alcoholic drink to take back to our room. The bartender stopped us and insisted we return it due to lounge rules. Fine—rules are rules, and we respected that. What was not fine was what happened moments later. As we got into the elevator, two other guests walked in with the exact same drinks in hand—drinks they were clearly allowed to take without any issue. Whether it was because they knew the staff or simply because they were treated differently for another reason, the inconsistency was hard to overlook. Being held to a rule that others are free to ignore feels unfair and leaves a bad taste, far more so than the rule itself. Overall, while the hotel has some good qualities, the uneven service and lack of attention to detail genuinely undermined our experience. For the price point, I expected much better.
