Pocket Guide: Lauterbrunnen Mürren Hotels

Muerren offers the best of both worlds: a relatively quiet alpine retreat for relaxation and plenty of opportunities for getting out and about. High up above the valley of Lauterbrunnen, you can get to this unspoilt village by cable car or the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Muerren railway. From authentic alpine lodges to luxury retreats, Muerren has a great choice of accommodation to suit all budgets.

Where to Stay in Muerren

With some of the best snow in the area, Muerren, with its long open runs, is good if you’ve got some experience on your side. You’ll find a number of three- and four-star hotels in the village, all in walking distance from the lifts and the train station to take you to the nearby resort of Wengen. All hotels have ski rooms, so you can leave your equipment out to dry, and many have spas and swimming pools, gourmet restaurants, and stylish bars serving premium wines and cocktails.

Things to See in Muerren

James Bond fans might recognise Muerren from the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but the resort has remained secluded and quite traditional, avoiding the more commercial elements of some ski resorts. That makes it an ideal destination for families and couples looking for a low-key ski holiday. In the winter, Muerren has more than 30 miles of ski runs and more than a dozen ski lifts for you to choose from.

See Trümmelbach falls, a series of underground waterfalls beneath an impressive glacial gorge. Go to the romantic Schiltalp Hut, a typical alpine hut with fantastic views of Mönch, Jungfrau and Eiger mountains. In January, watch or take part in the Inferno Race, where amateur skiers race from Schilthorn to the finish line at Lauterbrunnen reaching speeds of about 63 miles per hour.

Best Place to Eat in Muerren

The panoramic revolving restaurant known as Piz Gloria, at the summit of the Schilthorn, was one of the settings for the James Bond film. Today, you can enjoy a meal or snack, before heading out on the large walkway observation deck to enjoy the views. You'll need to wrap up warm here, even in summer, although braving the cold will definitely be worth it.
