Learn about six divisions of British regimental history in these fascinating museums that stand within the stately and iconic Peninsula Barracks.

The Military Museums are six independent institutions that shed light onto Britain’s regimental history. Their displays range from the use of royal horses in war to a gun gallery and a museum about soldiers from Nepal recruited by the British Army. Get a wider understanding of British military history with a trip to these fascinating museums.

Note that the museums are located in the majestic military buildings of the Peninsula Barracks. These buildings were an important centre for infantry training in 1960, before closing in 1986. Enter the visitor’s centre for a brief understanding of each museum.

Learn about the three iconic cavalry regiments in the Horse Power, the Regimental Museum of the King’s Royal Hussars. Watch the audiovisual display and admire the decorated uniforms, medals and weapons. Enter the Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum for its interactive timeline and serene Memorial Garden.

Another mainstay is the Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, which provides information about the special regiment that fought from 1966 in Borneo until 2007 in Iraq. Visit the Gurkha Museum to find out about the role played by proud Nepalese soldiers called up to fight. Make sure to see the Rifles Collection and the Adjutant General’s Corps in the Guard House.

Attend one of the temporary events and lectures that take place year-round. These have included such topics as Jane Austen and the Regimentals and Memorials to the Gurkhas in the UK and Abroad. Enjoy a light meal at the charming Copper Joe’s Café, which specializes in cups of tea and slices of cake.

There is a fee for a joint ticket that includes all of the museums together. Hours vary depending on the museum, with open days running from morning until late afternoon.

The Military Museums comprise a small cluster of buildings a little northwest of the main street in the centre of Winchester. Ride a bus to one of the stops just outside the museums. See other sights in this area, including the Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Museum and Oram’s Arbour park.
