Pocket Guide: Sicily Milazzo Hotels
Explore the region surrounding Messina with a visit to the historic city of Milazzo, which is also one of the ports for boat trips to the Aeolian islands.
What to See in Milazzo
Start with a visit to the 13th-century Milazzo Castle, built by Frederick II, which holds a commanding position over the town. Within its grounds are an old cathedral and the former town hall as well as a Benedictine monastery and its cloisters. From here you can take in wonderful views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Just below the castle is the Antiquarium di Milazzo, an archaeological museum housed in a 16th-century military barracks, which is well worth a visit. Then wander Milazzo’s narrow streets in the Borgo Antico, the old town that developed during the Middle Ages. Stroll along the seafront promenade before going for a swim in Milazzo’s beach, which is wide, long and rarely gets crowded.
Go a little further out for even more captivating views in. Take a drive along Capo Milazzo, the spit that juts out from the town, and when you get to the tip, walk out to see the lighthouse as well as the ruins of Santuario di San Antonio da Padova, a 13th-century church. Take a moment to enjoy the peace and quiet and look back at the rugged coastline of both north-eastern Sicily and Calabria on the Italian mainland.
Where to Stay in Milazzo
There’s good choice of accommodation in Milazzo. Choose a relaxed family-run B&B whose owners will help you out with tips on what to see and do around Milazzo. If you stay in one of the hotels in Capo Milazzo, you can enjoy the views of the Sicilian coast, while other hotels are just a short walk from Milazzo’s beach. Find a place to stay with its own kitchen for a spot of self-catering with all the fresh local produce and seafood. Or opt for a farm stay, where your hosts will spoil you with home-grown, home-cooked meals, looking out over peaceful farmland. If your hotel is in Milazzo itself, check out the restaurants lining Lungomare – the seafront promenade – where sea views come with generous plates of fresh seafood and fish.
