Midtjylland or Mid Jutland is the central part of Denmark, with about one-fifth of the nation’s population and numerous attractions for vacation enjoyment. Travel to some of the 19 municipalities to appreciate natural wonders and meet the region’s friendly residents. Enjoy food ranging from street vendors to Michelin-starred restaurants. Herring, schnitzel and biksemad (Danish hash) are among the local favorite dishes. Århus is the largest city in Midtjylland, a great place to start your exploration. In the suburb of Højbjerg be sure to see Moesgaard Museum or MOMU, with one of Scandinavia’s finest collections of archeology and ethnography. Other sites of interest in Århus include Marselisborg Deer Park and the open-air museum of Den Gamle By. Savor a Danish pastry here as you mingle with guides in period dress. Explore the city’s cultural scene with art and music at the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum and Musikhuset Aarhus. The region’s capital city of Viborg lies in an area of rolling green hills. Drive just south of the city to see the pretty spring-fed lake of Hald Sø and the hills of Dollerup Bakkur. Hald Hovedgård provides a reminder of Denmark’s homes of the late 1700s. Ringkøbing-Skjern is the westernmost municipality of Midtjylland, with lovely natural attractions along its coastline. Come for the Sandskulpturfestival i Soendervig during the summer to see amazingly detailed sand sculptures. Tour Ringkøbing’s gardens featuring hostas and roses. At Hvide Sande relax on sandy beaches of the North Sea or the Ringkøbing Fjord. Randers Regnskov is a lively zoo specializing in tropical animals in Randers. For more animal sightings, visit AQUA Aquarium & Animal Park in Silkeborg. If you come to the region during early August, plan to attend Smukfest, the annual music festival in Skanderborg. Fly to Midtjyllands Airport in the central part of the region or drive from Copenhagen to Århus in about 3 hours.
