Herning is known as a cultural centre, hosting a wide range of museums. Even though the town is at the centre of Jutland, a specially built man-made lake provides the opportunity for locals and visitors alike to take part in water sports, swim and fish.
Herning started life as a small town in the mid-19th century, but as the surrounding heaths were cultivated, it was awarded its charter as a market town in the early 20th century. Wool production grew rapidly, leading to Herning becoming renowned for its textile industry. The Textilforum exhibitions in the former Herning Klædefabrik tell the story of how the industry has changed over the years.
Whether you are here for a weekend break or a full holiday, we recommend a visit to Birk Centerpark to explore over 4,000 artworks at the colourful and exciting Carl-Henning Pedersen og Else Alfelts Museum. Don’t miss the giant Elia sculpture on your way out, with the fantastic view offered from the top. If you are lucky enough to arrive at the right time, you might catch the 8.4 metre column of flame which is shot into the air at random intervals during the day.
Fuglsang Lake is the town’s artificial lake – a favourite place for a stroll or for lazing on the grassy banks in the summer. You can fish or sail on the lake or try your hand at windsurfing. Visit Løvbakke Dyrehave (Løvbakke Animal Park) to see the multitude of deer that roam the park on a stroll through the grounds.
Reaching Herning by road is easy, with several major roads and a motorway converging in the town. Herning is also a rail hub, with excellent links to Struer, Skjern, Kolding, Aarhus and the main islands of Funen and Zealand.
