A trip to Viborg takes you to one of the oldest towns in Denmark – dating right back to the late 900s. The full story of the town’s history is told at Viborg Museum, and a visit to Hvolris Iron Age Village makes you part of the telling, with the chance to try your hand at an ancient craft.
Visit Viborg Cathedral to see the beautiful interior with its magnificent arches and original crypt. The current building dates from the 1800s, as the original – dating right back to the 1100s – suffered a series of fires down the years. Viborg's location at the centre of Jutland makes it easy to reach by road. There are also excellent rail links to Struer, Aarhus and Copenhagen. The bus station next door to the rail station has links to a number of destinations in Jutland.
One of the biggest limestone mines in the world, at Mønsted Kalkgruber, is open to the public with endless labyrinths to explore and an underground cinema. Bats flit among the galleries over your head and in the summer a special mine train takes visitors deep into the heart of the mine. The mines at Daugbjerg Kalkgruber run treasure hunts and tell the story of local bandit Jens Langkniv.
Kids will love the AQUA Aquarium and Zoo, which provide a unique insight into the fauna of Danish lakes and rivers. Spend a couple of hours on the giant bouncy castle or play any of the ball games at Viborg Legeland. If travelling without children, you can enjoy a quiet moment in one of the town’s galleries or go on a guided tour of Viborg Bryghus, where you can also sample the brewery's specialities.
