Headed down the Seward Highway from Anchorage, almost right across the street from Portage Glacier Rd, is one of the most beautiful conservation centers Ive ever seen. Set up in the Chugach National Park with majestic glacier capped mountains in the background is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Visitors have an opportunity to get an up close view of AK wildlife including elk, caribou, owls, bears and this moose, among many others. You have the option of walking ir driving through, but i highly recommend the walk. Its not a very expansive place but it is just absolutely incredible to see and you will not get the full experience from the inside of a car. Best of all, all of the proceeds from their entrance fees goes back into the conservation center!

Sven's Basecamp Hostel in Fairbanks has some of the coolest accommodation options--such as this treehouse, a tipi, cabins, wall tent glamping, etc. Sven also has a couple cute dogs and one teeny tiny husky puppy that everyone fought over to hold. Rent canoes here as well. Showers are costly (25 cents per minute!) but only because their water has to be brought in via truck so they try not to use too much too quickly. Wifi available.

"The room was ample and clean. The staff for the most part were very friendly and accommodating. The daily breakfast was very welcome, considering the generally high price of restaurant food in Fairbanks as elsewhere. The location of the facility, in the old downtown area, is convenient to some of the local restaurants, which is a plus. They also provide a free hourly shuttle service to a number of places in town. Another plus is the photo souvenir shop in the lobby, which is operated by a local photographer who has a multitude of prints of wildlife and scenes in a variety of forms from refrigerator magnets to metal 8x10 wall prints. We used the Springhill as a base for a week long trip that focused on seeing the aurora borealis and got more than we bargained for."
