"Summer in Kyoto"
Our family of four (two kids aged 11 and 15) enjoyed a fantastic week at Gagakuan. Our host Saki was very responsive from the initial reservation until we departed. She even dropped off a delicious birthday cake for my daughter who celebrated her birthday the day before we arrived. This is not a traditional hotel room but a traditional Japanese house in a very nice neighbourhood. The house itself is very well equipped and a fantastic way to experience living in a traditional family home. Although more than 100 years old and very traditional, it has been equipped with a number of modern touches that enhance the stay. Our two kids were absolutely fascinated with the house and the entire environment. For our purposes, it was ideally situated between Kyoto station and central Kyoto. The Gojo subway stop and the bus stop are both less than a five minute walk from the house. This allows you to easily access the public transportation system to all of the wonderful temples. We also took side trips to Osaka, Nara and a day trip to Hiroshima using our Japan rail passes. Except for a few hot days (typical for Kyoto in the summer), we had a perfect time in Kyoto thanks to our great stay at Gagakaun and the kind generosity of Saki. We hope we get another chance to return to Kyoto and see the things we missed this visit and stay here again.

"Great location - best service"
We arrived and were checked in quickly. The friendly staff gave us immediate tips on how to tackle Kyoto. The neighborhood was very cool. Really well located. Behind the hotel is a beautiful quiet neighborhood of winding street and alleys that really give a taste of the real Kyoto. We want to call out especially one person, a concierge names Mizuki Kitazawa. Mizuki was the most friendly, helpful and effective concierge front desk person that we have EVER had ANYWHERE. She really gave us the inside track to exclusive restaurant reservations (one of the best meals of our lives), ways to get to shops, sites, etc. at the right times, and even insisted on carrying our very heavy luggage to the waiting taxi upon our departure. The hotel was great - but Mizuki made is special.

"Really nice and spacious rooms"
Stayed in room 402 for just one night, but really wished I could have stayed longer. The rooms were really huge with plenty of facilities such as a Nespresso machine (with complementary coffee!), a bath tub and walk-in closet. It's situated just across the road from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and walking distance to Teramachi and Nishiki market which are great places for shopping and finding good food. Staff was really helpful and recommended me a nearby restaurant for dinner. There are also plenty of information readily available from the information counter which was really helpful. 5 stars and would stay here again.
