The capital city of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion offers a friendly welcome from locals, and is popular with tourists for its striking architecture –including the famous Palace of Knossos. There’s plenty of accommodation in Heraklion to choose from, ranging from cheaper options to luxury hotel stays – and all ideal for a relaxing Mediterranean break.
An overnight stay in Heraklion can be booked fairly cheaply. Most of the hotels in the city are relatively inexpensive, while still offering good service and English-speaking staff. The city’s classic beach hotels are ever-popular, but there are plenty of other options to choose from – quirky rooms decorated to look like boats, as well as hotels offering five-star luxury.
Many of the cheaper hotels have a pool and bar, and are also close to the beach – which means that even if you don’t want to spend too much money, you can still have a great time in Heraklion.
There are lots of family-friendly hotels in Heraklion, and with many close to the beach and offering an outdoor pool to splash around in, kids of all ages should be satisfied.
Although Heraklion’s main attraction is its architecture, there are several family-friendly activities to be found just outside the city. These include the Cretaquarium, nine miles (14km) outside Heraklion, which features a shark tank and has handy English signage, and the Watercity Waterpark in Gouves, a short 20-minute drive from Heraklion.
Usually yes. When you book a hotel in Heraklion with Expedia, you’ll usually be able to pay online using your credit or debit card. Some hotels will also allow you to pay on arrival or at checkout, depending on which you prefer.
In general, it’s a good idea to have some cash on you wherever you are in Crete, including Heraklion. Although larger shops and restaurants will take credit and debit cards, some smaller tavernas and local shops will only take cash. Handing over the correct change wherever possible is also appreciated, so try to take smaller notes.
From the airport, you can take a taxi or jump on one of the shuttle buses that travel between the airport and the most popular hotels in Heraklion. If you book accommodation in the city's central areas, you can easily make the most of what the city's got to offer, with most attractions being within walking distance.
However, because Crete is a small island with lots to discover, it can be a good idea to rent a car in Heraklion – this gives you the freedom to get out there and explore both the local area and the rest of the island.
Heraklion is perhaps best-known for its sights and architecture. One of the most popular destinations is the ancient Palace of Knossos, three miles (5km) outside the city. Built during the Greek Bronze Age, it was the religious and political centre of Minoan culture and is today a must-see for visitors to Crete. After visiting the palace, head to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Considered to be one of the most important museums in Europe, it’s home to some of the archaeological treasures of Knossos, and is well worth a trip while enjoying a holiday in Heraklion.
There are plenty of other architectural attractions inside the city that should not be missed. These include the St Titus Church, set in a pretty square with several cafés and bars nearby, the imposing St Minas Cathedral, and Koules Fortress by Heraklion Port, just outside the ancient city walls. If you’re looking for hotels in Heraklion Port, the Aquila Atlanta Hotel in Heraklion Port is a very attractive option.
But you don’t have to visit these specific sites to experience the city’s cultural history – the whole of Heraklion is full of fascinating sculptures and fountains, and a short walk from most hotels should all you need to enjoy a visual journey through the city’s history.
