Top English Riviera Hotel Reviews

The Imperial Torquay

The Imperial Torquay

10/10 Excellent
"We stayed at The Imperial for a week and overall had a very good stay, with a few caveats. We originally booked a cosy room, but it was very small, stuffy, had no AC, and the sea-view balcony could not be opened due to renovation safety restrictions. For one night it might have been manageable, but not for a week. Reception handled it very well: within about 10 min they moved us to a much larger room. It had no balcony or sea view, but the windows opened, so we considered it an upgrade. WiFi was patchy and mobile signal was poor, though this did not bother us much as we spent most days out or on the beach. Breakfast was outstanding: buffet-style, from full English to continental, served in a dining room with a panoramic view over Tor Bay. That view is probably the hotel’s biggest selling point. Staff were very helpful throughout. They even washed our beach towels daily on request, free of charge! The interior is stunning: Victorian, historic, and full of pictures, drawings and memorabilia, including a 1945 Victory Dinner menu. A hidden gem for history lovers. The exterior, however, looks tired and is far less impressive. The gardens and terrace are lovely, with the same fantastic bay view. The outdoor pool was closed, but the weather was excellent, so we swam in the sea instead. Quiet, characterful hotel with superb breakfast and helpful staff. Book carefully, especially regarding room size, balcony access and lack of AC."

The Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"Great location close to station, coastal bus routes and with excellent sea views from the terrace and restaurant. Food really good - plenty of breakfast options and the restaurant meals were superb. Ask for tap water though - cost us £4.95 for bottle of still water! Pool lovely and warm. Room clean, comfortable and a good size. Really enjoyed our second stay here and would stay again."

"The hotel overall was good. Me and my wife was here for a short stay. The staff was very friendly, breakfast was lovely. We had to check out early as my wife had work to do and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The only thing I'd say could be improved here is that they can have AC put in at the hotel because it does get hot inside during hot weather"

The Trecarn Hotel

The Trecarn Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The staff were lovely, friendly, helpful and welcoming. The room was clean with an on-suite bathroom with toilet, sink, and combination bath and shower. We ate breakfast and dinner during our stay and the food was good with a full English, toast, cereal, yogurt and fruit for breakfast and salad or soup for starters 2 meat options and a fish option for main and a selection of cakes for pudding for dinner. Breakfast wasn’t greasy and dinner was like a home cooked meal, not fussy but tasty. Overall we had a great time. Parking is on the road but we always found a space. The hotel offered evening entertainment of a singer each night from 8-10pm with an open bar which was nice to sit and listen to before going to bed. You could not hear the singer from your bedroom so you were not disturbed if you chose not to attend."

"I was very impressed with my stay at this hotel. The only thing that let it down, in my view, was the lack of storage for clothes etc."

Pocket Guide: Devon English Riviera Hotels

The stretch of Devon's coastline between Torquay, Paignton and Brixham is known as the English Riviera - and with good reason! If you choose a hotel, guesthouse or B&B in any of these towns you can save yourself the trouble of travelling to Spain or Italy in the summer. Along with award-winning beaches, a stunning coastline and even rows of palm trees lining the main promenade in Torquay, you'll find a wealth of other attractions and numerous accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets.

Hotels in Devon for Fun Nights Out on the English Riviera

Although this stretch of Devon's exquisite coastline is famous for its daytime attractions, the interest doesn't let up in the evenings either. Paignton, Torquay and Brixham have some of the best bars, clubs and nightspots in Devon, along with excellent restaurants serving a range of local and international dishes. Whether you're staying up late to boogie the night away or just fancy a drink and a snack, you'll find what you need in the local pubs and dining venues. With so much going on you can choose a hotel, guesthouse or B&B right in the heart of town or further out that will suit your budget and your needs.

Activities from Devon Hotels on the English Riviera

Many locales like Torquay along the English Riviera are fringed by palm trees and overlook award-winning beaches. There's always plenty to do in the water here during a family holiday, and also attractions like the magnificent Geopark. This stretch of the coast is recognised by UNESCO and is a unique environment in which to get the kids interested in fossils and dinosaurs.

Babbacombe Bay is especially popular for its cliff top walks and stunning vistas. It has England's highest promenade and the views from here across south Devon are simply breath-taking. In nearby Paignton there's a famous zoo as well as lots of family-friendly attractions. Crabbing and rock-pooling are great fun here and on Goodrington Sands there's a Seashore Centre for visitors to the shoreline to learn more about the various things they've caught at low tide. This makes a great day out from your Devon hotel or B&B, whether you're based on the coast or inland.
