Pocket Guide: Delft

Delft, also known as The Prince’s City was once the home of William of Orange, who lived in Delft from 1572 until his death in 1584. After he was killed in 1584, he was buried in a mausoleum in the Nieuwe Kerk. Ever since then, members of the Oranje-Nassau family have been buried in Delft. Delft is also known for Delfts blue or Delftware: the world famous blue-white pottery.

Sleep in the City Centre

The historical city centre of Delft is a great location to book your hotel. Here you’ll be close to the Nieuwe Kerk, one of the city’s premier eye-catching attractions. It has the tallest church tower in the Netherlands (109 metres) after the Dom in Utrecht. It is also a church with a royal touch, because ever since Willem van Oranje’s murder in 1584, members of the royal family have been buried here. Even though you cannot visit the crypt, you can admire Willem van Oranje’s mausoleum.

Next to the Nieuwe Kerk you will find pottery workplaces, where the Delftware used to be made. Did you know Delftware was supposed to be a cheaper alternative to china?

Other attractions include the city hall, the Oude Kerk (you will recognize this church because of its leaning tower), the Voldergracht (a half canal) and the Oostpoort (the last remaining city gate).

Staying Near the Train Station

If you’re looking for ultimate convenience, you can book a hotel close to the train station. This is especially suitable for those who visit Delft by public transport. You can easily get to the city centre from the train station by foot or by using the city’s public transport network.
