The walled city has ancient Roman roots and an abundance of historic sites, such as the Exeter Ship Canal and the cathedral. Otherwise head east to London, which is a three-hour drive from Wells, 139 miles up the M3.
The M5, M4 and M3 motorways all run close to Wells but there are also a lot of country roads in the area. It is worth taking a detour through Ebbor Gorge, which is a beautiful drive.
