Why rent a car in Miramar?

Miramar in Florida is the perfect base to visit the region’s beaches and the famous Everglades. The town is small in comparison to many of its high octane neighbours – Miami and Fort Lauderdale are within 25 miles. But this pretty town, which is punctuated by lakes and palm trees, offers respite from the glitz and a few more affordable hotels. Get a hire car in Miramar and the top tourist spots are within half an hour’s drive.

The Everglades National Park is immediately west of Miramar. There are three entrances from this side of the park - the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Centre, Flamingo Visitor Centre and the Shark Valley Visitor Centre. The Everglades spans 1.5 million acres so take some time to plan your visit.

Must-sees within an easy drive of Miramar

Pompano Beach is 28 miles north of Miramar and a drive of about half an hour. This is a popular place for scuba diving and snorkelling as there is a coral reef and a number of old shipwrecks just offshore. If you are not an experienced diver then there are courses available. There is also a 1,000-foot-long fishing pier on the beach and an historic lighthouse that opens for tours.

A few miles south along the coast is Fort Lauderdale (from Miramar it is a 20-minute drive). Simply relax on the beach or head to the shops on Las Olas Boulevard and then board a boat and cruise past the huge houses and yachts along Millionaires Row. Port Everglades, where the huge cruise ships line up beside each other as if they are small fishing boats, is also worth a look, if only to get some idea of the scale of the place.

Just south of Fort Lauderdale is Hollywood, one of the prettiest stretches of white sandy beaches on the coast. There is also a bustling boardwalk area. Why not drive through on your way to the party city of Miami, which is 20 miles from Miramar, a drive of 25 minutes. Head to South Beach for pastel-coloured lifeguard towers and wide expanses of sand, then try the colourful district of Wynwood to see some stunning street art, modern art galleries and restaurants. In the city centre, the Frost Science Museum has an aquarium and a planetarium among its many exhibits.
