Macon is known as ‘the heart of Georgia’ as it’s right at the centre of the state. The city is also nicknamed ‘the cherry blossom capital of the world’ and has over 275,000 cherry trees lining its elegant boulevards. Macon is home to Mercer University and is also known for its variety of festivals, abundance of historic architecture and thriving live music scene. Other attractions include the Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home, the Old Government House, Enterprise Mill, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Augusta Museum of History, the Morris Museum of Art and Lake Olmstead Stadium. There are also many activities to enjoy on the Savannah river, including boating, kayaking and canoeing.
Georgia’s capital city, Atlanta, is a 147-mile drive by rental car from Augusta. Known as the ‘capital of the South’, pretty Atlanta is booming as a tourist hotspot. The city is known for its fabulous restaurant scene and creative vibe, with key attractions being the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the Georgia State Capitol building, Centennial Olympic Park, the Millennium Gate, the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Georgia Aquarium. The city even boasts its own World of Coca-Cola museum.
If you’re driving in Georgia, bear in mind that some of the more remote roads can be in poor condition. Also keep an eye out for livestock on the roads. The US is right-hand drive and remember to keep an eye on your mirror, as drivers don’t always indicate a direction change.
