Each year in Macon, GA a festival bringing people in from surrounding area pops up for a week in early spring. The cherry blossom festival is a festival that most people have heard of, for I'm sure you have one near you. The one in Macon lasts a week an has carnival rides, strong man competitions, dog trick shows, mattress races, and many many more fun things to do all week.

On the first Saturday of the festival a unique event happens that brings tens of thousands to just sit and watch. The balloon glow. Hot air balloons come in from all around and set up in the fields outside Macon state college. During the afternoon and into the evening you are able to pay $10 and go up for a short ride that will briefly give you the experience of a hot air balloon ride. But at night, that is when things light up. With a live band on stage these balloons light up the night sky as they rise and fall through the air. With over 20 balloons it is beautiful when they all go off at the same time. People cheer, horns blow, bands play, and everyone has a great time as these balloons shows each year.

One of Georgia’s most distinguished structures, the Johnston-Felton-Hay House in Macon was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974. It was built from 1855 to 1859 in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, a marked contrast to the more restrained Greek Revival architecture of the antebellum period.

The 18,000-square-foot mansion spans four levels and is crowned by a three-story cupola. Commissioned by imaginative owners and constructed by the most skillful workers of the time, its technological amenities were unsurpassed in the mid-19th century: hot and cold running water, central heat, a speaker-tube system, in-house kitchen and an elaborate ventilation system.

Only two families lived in Hay House over three generations. Most of the museum’s furnishings date from the Hay family’s occupancy (1926-1962). A few pieces are from the Johnston family
