The nearest transport hub to the Amalfi Coast is Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport. However, most tourists coming to this region fly into Naples International (NAP), situated 40 miles north of the Amalfi Coast, on the outskirts of Naples. It’s an excellent place to hire a car, as it is equipped with several rental agencies. From there, you can drive to the village of Vietri Sul Mare in just 45 minutes. This is the perfect place to begin a driving tour of the Amalfi Coast, and is home to the lovely Marina di Vietri beach.
If you wish to hire a car closer to the Amalfi Coast, you may find it easiest to pick one up in the towns of Sorrento or Salerno. Sorrento is located northwest of the Amalfi Coast and has several car rental agencies, including Hertz and Europcar. There are also several places to hire a vehicle in Salerno, east of the Amalfi Coast. You will find plenty of delightful places to explore from these two locations.
From Sorrento, the picturesque town of Positano is just 30 minutes away by car – from Salerno, the popular road trip start-point of Vietri Sul Mare is just 15 minutes away. Other car rental offices can be found in towns along the Amalfi Coast, too. However, most travellers find it more convenient to pick up a vehicle at the starting point of their route.
Taking a road trip along the Amalfi Coast is one of the most freeing ways to experience the region. One popular route starts in Salerno, and heads into Vietri Sul Mare, four miles west. From there, you can follow the SS163 – also known as Amalfi Drive – all the way to Positano, passing by the beautiful coastal towns and villages of Ravello, Amalfi, Erchie, Conca Dei Marini and Praiano on the way.
Stunning scenery and excellent Neapolitan cuisine abound in this area, but the larger towns of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano also boast some popular tourist attractions. Keen sightseers or history buffs should make time for the Cathedral of Amalfi, Villa Rufolo in Ravello, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Positano.
As well as boasting a number of historic buildings, the Amalfi Coast is also notable for its dramatic natural landscapes of sheer cliff faces, crashing waves, and secluded forests. Two particularly astonishing highlights are the sea cave in Conca dei Marina, known as the Emerald Grotto, and the Vallone dei Mulini, a historic valley which is home to an abandoned mill and notable for its unique plant life. Wherever you go, just remember to take your camera!
