Chiang Mai Holiday Guide

This Thai city is known as "The Rose of the North” and all you need do is discover the lush surroundings and relaxed atmosphere to understand exactly why.

Chiang Mai is popular with tourists for its cool climate and its stunning mountainous surroundings; a unique place where you can simultaneously enjoy the natural and cultural beauty of Thailand. It’s a favourite destination for hikers and mountaineers, but Chiang Mai has also regarded as a centre of art, making it popular with cultural tourists too.

Chiang Mai has over 700 years old and was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. In every street you can see old architecture that’s stood the test of time. Stroll through the Old Town and explore its temples, statues and monasteries. Learn more about the history and customs of Chiang Mai at the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Centre.

Plan an afternoon excursion to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a gold-encrusted Buddhist temple that offers beautiful views over Chiang Mai. In the city itself you will find hundreds of ancient temples; both Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, and Wat Phra Singh should not be missed.

Chiang Mai is renowned for its markets selling the tastiest regional cuisine, such as the city’s speciality curry, and local handicrafts. Make sure you try some khao soi, a local delicacy. If you want the best, visit the famous Nai Basa (night bazaar)- just make sure you keep enough space in your suitcase for the jewellery, paintings and other trinkets you can buy here.

The city is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and offers a wide range of attractive hotels and chic eateries. You can also find here all kinds of hostels and street vendors, so that Chiang Mai is a good destination if you have a somewhat tighter budget. Loi Kroh Road is a favourite place for both tourists. The bank of the Ping River, thanks to its location near the university also very lively.

Most of the city can be explored on foot, but there are plenty of taxis and tuk-tuks if you get tired. The city has its own airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, making it easy to reach from anywhere in the world.
