Chiang Mai is renowned for its markets selling the tastiest regional cuisine, such as the city’s speciality curry, and local handicrafts. Make sure you try some khao soi, a local delicacy. If you want the best, visit the famous Nai Basa (night bazaar)- just make sure you keep enough space in your suitcase for the jewellery, paintings and other trinkets you can buy here.

The city is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and offers a wide range of attractive hotels and chic eateries. You can also find here all kinds of hostels and street vendors, so that Chiang Mai is a good destination if you have a somewhat tighter budget. Loi Kroh Road is a favourite place for both tourists. The bank of the Ping River, thanks to its location near the university also very lively.

Most of the city can be explored on foot, but there are plenty of taxis and tuk-tuks if you get tired. The city has its own airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, making it easy to reach from anywhere in the world.
