Italy is renowned for its wine, food and art – and when you travel to a city like Florence you can enjoy all three in ultimate style. Situated in the north of the country along the banks of the Arno, Florence (or Firenze as it is known to locals) is the capital of the Tuscany region, and is widely recognised as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Book a flight here and you can immerse yourself in art, fashion, romance and some of the finest cuisine you could ever eat.
The easiest way to get to this marvellous city is to fly directly to Florence Airport (FLR), which is located northwest of the city centre. This international travel hub is the second busiest airport in the region after Pisa International. From the airport, the centre of Florence can be reached in 20 to 40 minutes by car or public transport, depending upon traffic.
You can also reach Florence from Pisa International (PSA), and as this airport serves more destinations you may find it more convenient to secure yourself a seat on a direct flight at certain times of the year. From Pisa International, the centre of Florence is an hour and 10 minutes by car.
Though it only has a single runway, Florence Airport serves a number of European destinations, allowing you to fly to cities such as London, Munich, Rome, Vienna, Madrid and Zurich from there. Prestigious air carriers such as Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Iberia, KLM and Lufthansa all run flights from this airport.
If you're looking for business class and premium economy flights, you may like to fly with British Airways, CityJet or Iberia, and if you wish to save a little money you can try flying with Vueling. You can browse your options without any hassle with the Expedia search tool to search for connecting flights.
Driving in the historic centre of Florence can be a little restrictive, as only permanent residents may drive in certain areas, and parking can sometimes be tricky. If you're staying on the outskirts of Florence and plan to explore the city and the surrounding region, a better option would be to make use of the public transport system. Florence has a good public bus network, plus a tram line which connects the train station at Santa Maria Novella with the suburb of Scandicci. Of course, with all its narrow winding lanes and stunning architecture, you’ll also want to spend some time traversing the city on foot!
There are countless things to see and do in Florence, but you might wish to start your tour at the Uffizi, a gallery housing the greatest collection of Renaissance art in the world. You should make time, too, for Florence Cathedral and its iconic red-tiled Duomo, built over two centuries before it was genuinely considered to be finished. Other highlights include the historic Ponte Vecchio, the San Marco Museum, the beautiful Boboli Gardens and the artisan district of Oltrarno.

Seats were a bit tight and a bit squeezed in but its only a short flight so OK for a couple of hours.
The seats were not comfortable.....
... I cannot believe BA sell.food on a short flight. Surely a free cup of tea or coffee or even s.bottle of water won't break the bank?
Pleasantly surprised. Will fly Ryanair again :-)
Good all round service / App very useful
Quick, easy, affordable!
The other questions did not apply to me
Excellent flight in time & good landing
Really poor weather so we had over an hour to wait to take off. Captain was brilliant, kept us all well informed and no problem as it was out of his control
We paid for priority boarding but no one directed us to help find out where to go
