The Carnfunnock Country Park, located north of Larne on the Coast Road just outside Ballygalley, is a great day out for all the family. There are plenty of hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts in the area to ensure you won’t have far to go to rest your head after a day out at the park. There are hotels in Larne as well as other nearby towns such as Ballyclare, Ballymena and Antrim. Belfast is just over 20 miles away as well so the park is very accessible.
Set in 191 hectares of coastal parkland, Carnfunnock has plenty to see and do for children and adults alike. As well as the numerous activity areas, the park is home to walking trails, blooming gardens and a spectacular coastline that boasts stunning panoramic views of the Antrim coast and the North Channel. The park was originally part of the estate of Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon and many of the original features remain, including the walled garden, ice house and the lime kilns.
Kids of all ages will love the outdoor adventure playground as well as the family fun zone, while golfers of all ages and abilities can enjoy the nine hole, par three course. There’s also a driving range and golf academy next door for anyone wanting to hone their skills.
One of the most popular attractions at the park is the Carnfunnock Maze. Over 1,500 plants make up the maze in the shape of Northern Ireland. It has numerous paths and dead ends to fascinate, entertain and bewilder. Don’t worry about getting too lost as there is also a viewing platform to help with any rescue!
An excellent way of seeing everything the park offers is to follow one of the five walking trails that take in all the main features. The trails are colour coded and take from around 20 minutes to an hour to complete. They all start and finish at the visitors’ centre and are a perfect way to wind down after enjoying some of the more energetic activities on offer.
For the more adventurous there’s also the Highway to Health Route that runs from Carnfunnock County Park to the town of Larne. The park offers a varied calendar of events including the popular Easter celebrations where children can meet the Easter bunny and hunt for eggs. There are music performances throughout the summer and a host of other special events on bank holiday weekends. The park has a variety of eating facilities as well as extensive picnic areas where visitors are encouraged to bring along their own barbecues.
With so much to enjoy for all the family, Carnfunnock Country Park is an ideal day out with activities and events as well as stunning views of the rugged Antrim coastline. Why not book your hotel nearby and be perfectly placed to enjoy everything the park has to offer?
