Cairo University was founded in 1908 and was formerly known as the Egyptian University. Originally in central Cairo, its faculties were transferred over to its current main campus in Giza – just across the Nile from Cairo – in 1929.

If you want to stay near Cairo University, pick a hotel in one of the surrounding regions. The district of Al Duqqi is perhaps closest, though you can also easily access the university from neighbouring Giza, home to the most famous pyramids, or from one of the city-centre hotels near Tahrir Square. There are also plenty of accommodation options along the Nile with riverfront views.

A Historic Educational Institution

After Al Azhar University, Cairo University is the second oldest degree-granting university in Egypt. In contrast to its older counterpart, Cairo University was established with European-inspired principles and, as such, became a significant model for other state universities.

Cairo University’s Medical School was one of the first to be established in the Middle East and Africa, and the Pharmacy Faculty is revered around the globe for its continuous development and original theories. Three Nobel Laureates have stood among Cairo University’s graduates and the institution currently educates more than 200,000 students, including nearly 7,000 international students, across 25 faculties.
