Pocket Guide: 4 Stars Hotels in Builth Wells

Sitting in the Welsh half of the Wye Valley, which straddles the border with England, Builth Wells was built around the meeting point of two rivers: the Wye and Irfon. As you might expect, this naturally advantageous spot is home to some top hotels and tourist accommodation. Stay in this quintessential mid-Wales market town, home to a rich tradition of farming, and enjoy a big choice of hotels, from boutique to chain accommodation.

Visiting for the Royal Welsh Show

With visitors coming from around the world, the Royal Welsh Show is without doubt the main event of the year. With countless food stalls promoting local produce, livestock displays and even some rural sports competitions to enjoy, the show is a major attraction and typical of this part of agricultural Wales.

However, it also draws its fair share of city folk too, so book your hotel early if you want to have the best choice of accommodation for the show. Unsurprisingly, available rooms can start to fill up the closer you get to the show.

Come for the Shopping, Stay for the Hotels

Being such an archetypal rural destination, as you would expect there is a range of local and traditional food shops selling regional produce. You’ll find butchers, bakers and delicatessens, plus a selection of family-run general stores. In addition to this you will come across shooting, fishing and hunting outlets, and a great choice of boutique clothes and gift shops.

This more traditional approach to shopping, with family-run individual stores, is a refreshing change from the chain store dominated high street you usually find up and down the country. Stroll around the town and you get a real sense of how all towns in mid-Wales used to be. And with fine four star accommodation on the doorstep, it’s a charming and more than comfortable way to travel in time.

Eating Out in Builth Wells

Of course, with all this splendid local produce, eating out in Builth Wells is also something of an experience. With a big selection of restaurants, cafes and pubs serving up everything from traditional dishes to modern cuisine, there is something for everyone here.

Particularly recommended are the local meat dishes, including fresh steaks, pies and sausages, all raised and produced within a few miles of the town. For a small town, Builth Wells has a big appetite and there are more than enough eating establishments to dine well in a different location each night.

Where to Stay for the Great Outdoors

As well as the town itself, the surrounding countryside has plenty to offer visitors. From the peaceful fishing locations, pony trekking and trail walking, to 18-hole golf courses, there is plenty here to keep you very busy during your stay. Ask in your hotel about available activity options and they will be more than happy to make suggestions and even arrange your day out.
