"Parking is an issue at this hotel. Room was clean and comfortable. Food at the function I attended was very good considering the numbers involved. Some training of the serving staff might help. One of them knocked my drink over, said "Sorry" and that was that. Drinks were very pricey."

"It is a comfortable hotel with a slightly old fashioned feel, but it is a historic building and the staff are cheerful and helpful. My room was clean and the bed was comfortable and I appreciated the heavy curtains to cut out the sunlight. The stairs to the second floor were a bit tricky for an older guest when carrying luggage, although staff would have helped. I would certainly return."

Pocket Guide: 3 Stars Hotels in Builth Wells

The iconic and beautiful Wye Valley straddles the border between England and Wales, and it’s here, at the meeting of the Wye and Irfon rivers where you’ll find the town of Builth Wells. This is a great example of a classic mid-Wales town, reminiscent of how large swathes of the country used to be. It’s also a great tourist destination, with a wide range of affordable hotel options to choose from for your stay.

Staying in Naturally Beautiful Builth Wells

As you would expect, the natural location of Builth Wells means it’s all about getting outside into the fresh air. The surrounding woods, rivers and wetlands are home to numerous bird and animal species – so don’t forget to pack your binoculars.

You can also visit the red kite centre at Gigrin Farm, a great educational attraction set in over 200 acres of the countryside. There are lots of interactive displays and it’s a great place to learn more about the wildlife that calls this place home.

As well as this, there is spectacular pony trekking, trail walking and some secluded fishing spots to land the catch of the day. There’s also an 18-hole golf course where you can go and enjoy a round or two.

Staying in the Midst of History

Follow the signs to the site of Builth Castle, once a mighty fortress, although these days all that’s left is a series of ruins, mounds and earthworks, with some stunning views of the town below. It’s easy to imagine what it must have been like to live here all those years ago.

The town is also a more or less perfectly preserved version of a classic mid-Wales destination. With local, family-run shops selling local produce, including butchers, bakers and general grocers, it can feel like you’ve travelled back to a simpler time, when each town had its own identity and charm.

The town is littered with Grade II listed buildings, with the stone and masonry work typical of the region. The bridge over the Wye itself is over 200 years old and has been carrying local traffic for all that time.

Eating Out in Builth Wells

From your comfortable and affordable three star hotel in the town, you will be within easy reach of a number of fine eating establishments. The town boasts restaurants, pubs and cafes, all serving up a selection of traditional and modern cuisines, using only the best local products. Try the local meats, including sausages, steaks and pies, all made using locally-sourced livestock.

The town’s agricultural connections are highlighted by the bronze statue of a bull in the riverside park. It’s a strong statement about how life here in Builth Wells has been for centuries.

Enjoy Builth Wells

This quintessential mid-Wales town has a great selection of mid-range and affordable hotels. Meaning the charms of Builth Wells are available to all. Come during the Royal Welsh Show to see the town at its best, but book early as it can get busy during this period.
