Michelberger Hotel

Warschauer Str. 39-40 Berlin, 10243 Germany

The Michelberger Hotel is a budget hotel concept created by a group of friends- who had the idea to make the best hotel they could- the kind of hotel they would like to stay in.A place that is Show more individual- charismatic- stylish- fun- rebellious and inexpensive- a place where anything goes- just like Berlin itself.Set in an old factory building in the Eastern part next door to O2 World - each of the 110 rooms features loft-like ceilings and oversized windows. The rooms go from COSY to BAND- partially double-leveled- efficient in space and personal in style. Hand-built wooden furniture in each room is juxtaposed with a hodgepodge of mismatched flea-market finds in the public areas. Amenities include flat- screen TVs built into reclaimed industrial boxes and free Wi-Fi- a beer garden- 24 hour German Deli food and a blues bar with a small stage. Its intended for the new generation of sophisticated but laid- back travelers who want to have a high-style hotel experience at a budget price. “Wouldn't stay anywhere else”

I'm not trendy enough to hang out at a place like this, but it is perfect for Berlin. Great location, cool atmosphere, amazing prices. Definitely the place to stay if you're young and want a cool, artsy atmosphere that is affordable, central, and many steps up from a hostel.

“A Magical East Berlin Base”

First time i had been in the east and this hotel suited our needs perfectly. Based in a very vibrant area of the east, just metres from the metro station and local shops/bars. Simon-dach strasse being roughly five minutes away with plenty of options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. The hotel bar itself was great and one that many choose to frequent despite the numerous options nearby. The hotel room was compact, but had all we needed. Large bed, good shower and tv showing the Big Lebowski around the clock. Would definitely use this hotel again. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.

“Trendy and good priced hotel in a good location”

Right between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg two of the coolest areas in Berlin for food, shopping and bars; Michelberger is a nice trendy hotel with some fairly low priced rooms. Also just across the street from the S-Bahn and U-Bahn so it is super easy to move around the rest of the city. Our group had two different rooms. The rooms are small but nice. One of the showers was almost too small. It's in the corner with an angled door and has a big control valve which didn't leave much room to shower! But minor complaint. Our room didn't include the price of breakfast but luckily for us we decided to try it and it was excellent! Great coffee, tasty breads, and fresh fruit, plus eggs and lots of other options. I'd also recommend taking the free (they ask for tips if you enjoyed it) "Alternative Berlin" walking tour. Tour guides stop by around noon to pick up the group. Really great way to see some of the street art, squatter art communities and neighborhoods you won't see if you just go to the tourist sights. It gives you a very interesting perspective on life in modern Berlin.

Area recommendations
Kreuzberg for Turkish food and markets. And the clubs. Friedrichshain for a nice bar, Thai, Pizza and so many other great food options.

“Awesome, funky hotel!”

One of the best hotels we've ever stayed in. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We arrived before midday, but we were able to check-in early. The room was small, but was described as small, so was what we were expected, and the whole place was ultra funky!! Unfortunately the coffee machine was broken behind the bar for the whole time we were there, but otherwise, everything was just fantastic.

“Unique Hotel”

Very unique and intersting hotel. Right next to East Side Gallery - the largest remaining section of the Berlin Wall.Free WiFi. Very friendly and helpful staff. Enjoyed the experiences very much.

Area recommendations
West Berlin. The area/neighborhood where this hotel is located doesn't have much shopping or restaurants around.

“Interesting hotel”

Unique hotel with funky, trendy interior. Convenient location - close to the public transportation. It is very important in Berlin as it is a very wide spread city and you have to use the transportation. Breakfast is OK. Absolutely no storage space in the room. Very friendly staff. Nice place for the young people.

“Best Hotel in the Most-Interesting Neighborhood”

This is a superb hotel that I would recommend to anyone except the stodgy and straight-laced. It's so trendy that it doesn't have telephones in the rooms, assuming instead that the younger crowd that frequents it all is connected with their cells ("Handys" in German) or PDAs. The staff is all very young and hip, and speak excellent English (most seemed to be the children of parents where at least one was American, so the Brit accents I am used to hearing from Germans speaking English were nowhere to be found). The staff is friendly and helpful, perhaps to a fault!). The room was spacious, airy, bright and clean for the most part. The food in the sunny breakfast room was ample and reasonable-- very German, with lots of meats and cheese and smoked salmon. The location is perfect: right across from the Ubahn and a trolley that winds up through the old Ostzone into Prenzlauerberg and Mitte. The S-Bahn stop is less than five minutes walk, and the Schlesischer Tor is visible from the front rooms. The street noise is a bit much at night, but what would you expect from a neighborhood that is closer to Greenwich Village than any other city in Europe except perhaps Amsterdam? There are plenty of good restaurants up the nearby Simon Dach Strasse, and the River Spree is a 2-minute walk from the front door. Sightseeing is a snap-- the S-Bahn goes right to Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstrasse, Main Train Station, etc. where you can get trains to anywhere in the suburbs, region or even Europe.

Area recommendations
The neighborhood around the hotel (Friedrichshain) is fast becoming one of the hot new places in Berlin. While everyone talks about "Mitte," that neighborhood is already getting too pricey for me. The Warschauerstrasse that runs outside the hotel has its own tram line (the M13). Go up to the Revaler Strasse, make a right and then walk two blocks to Simon Dach Strasse. On your right is a crazy Hip-Hop squatter camp with things like "Suicide Circus" and lots of music. Up the Simon Dach Strasse are loads of excelletn restaurants, leading to a neighborhood of small shops selling a flea market's worth of things.
Getting around
The best way to see Berlin is the Welcome Card that can be purchased online or at the various large S-Bahn stations like Hauptbahnhof. If you're going to stay in the center of town, then the Zone 1-2 card is perfect. Trips out to Wannsee or Potsdam require the more expensive Zone 3 or 4. Germans ride the tram on a "trust, but verify" system: you purchase your Welcome Card, then "date it" in one of the ticket machines on any platform. But be sure to keep it in your wallet or purse, since the Transit Police roam the trains, trams and busses, and it's a 40 Euro fine if you're a "black rider" (_Schwartzfahrer_), a play on "black market." The subways are divided into two types: U-Bahn (underground) and S-Bahn (a hybrid commuter train and subway). The U-Bahn isn't as extensive or efficient as the London Tube, but when used with the S-Bahn, makes getting around Berlin easy. The network is a little cockeyed, the product of Berlin being divided for a half-century, and the lines in the former West Berlin are more numerous than in the old East Zone. One of my favorites is the Ring line which circles the city. Get on and hop off to see whatever neighborhoods interest you. Trams are also a good way to see this huge, great city. Busses are also covered on the card, though figuring out the bus network is probably more time-consuming than it's worth. Still, it was helpful to be able to hop on one from the Charlottenburg Palace when going the few long blocks back to the S-Bahn station.
Dining
The Italian restaurants along the Simon Dach Strasse are all very good. One specialty in the other direction is Chez Gino, which has traditional Berlin fare like Flammkuchen (a sort of pizza) and Spaetzel (potato strips cooked in cheese and onions). Blutwurst (blood sausage) sounds dreadful, but is delicious for the adventurous (but bring cash, they don't take credit cards).

Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany: Formerly in East Berlin, the arrival of MTV Europe and other media companies has enhanced Friedrichshain’s reputation as one of the liveliest, most fashionable areas in Berlin. Its pubs, clubs and cafés centre round Boxhagener Platz and Simon-Dach-Strasse, and a long section of the Berlin Wall remains on Mühlen Strasse. Karl-Marx-Allee is a testament to Stalinist architecture; the Volkspark Friedrichshain houses the Brothers Grimm Fountain.
