- Rhodes Luxury holidays
Rhodes is the largest and most populated of the Greek Dodecanese Islands - literally translating as the Twelve Islands, although there are actually 15 in the group in the present day. Rhodes historically served as the capital of the Dodecanese, and was once home to the Knights Hospitaller, who also took ownership of neighbouring islands including Kos. Today Rhodes is the administrative seat of the islands, and a popular destination for luxury holidays, particularly among visitors from Europe and the UK.
Rhodes' Valley of the Butterflies
While many people visit Rhodes simply to enjoy the climate and the weather, Petaloudes Valley is well worth a trip in the summer months. This translates from Greek as the Valley of the Butterflies, and large numbers of tiger moths can be seen gathering there during the warmest days of the year. They descend on the valley once the wet season is over at the end of May - their behaviour reflecting that of the tourists who arrive on to Rhodes at the same time, ready to take a luxury break on the idyllic Greek island.
On the trail of the Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and stood at around 100 feet tall, making it one of the period's tallest statues. It was built around 280 BC, but survived only around 50 years before an earthquake in 226 BC demolished it. The precise location of the statue is not known, but visiting some of the potential sites - from the coastline, to the Acropolis on the hill Monte Smith - is a great way to get around Rhodes and see some of its architectural gems.
When should I visit Rhodes?
The climate of Rhodes includes some extremely hot days, with record highs of over 40°C on the island in August. The highest temperatures on record are over 30C in every month from April to October, and over 20°C in the remaining months of the year. Generally the hottest part of the day will reach about 15°C in winter and 30°C in summer, with July and August the hottest months. June, July, August and September all average less than one day of rainfall, so if you want the best chance of a rain-free stay, this is when you should head to Rhodes.
