  • Sri Lanka Family holidays

A destination once described by the explorer Marco Polo as the finest island in the world continues to delight visitors in the modern day. Previously known as Ceylon, today's travellers head out on family holidays to Sri Lanka, and become part of a crucial economy in the process. The island offers a contrast between its coast and its interior, and this means you can choose between a traditional beach holiday to enjoy the sun, sea and sand, or a cultural trip to the forested interior, or a combination of the two.

    The best laid plans

Dating from around a thousand years before the bible, the sacred city of Anuradhapura is one of the main historical attractions on family holidays to Sri Lanka. Sigiriya, a rock fortress built by early Buddhist inhabitants, looks impressive enough in its own right, but becomes even more so when you realise that its symmetrical layout might be the earliest surviving evidence of putting such careful planning into something on the scale of a city. It dates from around 500 years later than the sacred city, but as both sites are labelled as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, they should both hopefully be around for a long time to come.

    The sand and the strand

Some of the best resorts for beach breaks are found in the west of the island, and family holidays on Sri Lanka's western coastline can take in the towns of Induruwa and Bentota, among others. The sequence of hotels interspersed with the countryside and tranquil lagoons provide high quality accommodation for visitors of all ages, while the beaches are arguably as good as you'll find anywhere else in the world.

    Getting active in Sri Lanka

If you prefer to stay active, there are some great options to do just that during cheap family holidays in Sri Lanka. Many of these involve wildlife, and you may be able to go on a tour of some of the island's natural habitats and the creatures that dwell in them. Elephants are an important part of the local culture, so look out for the opportunity to get up close to a good-tempered one. Or for a more traditional choice of activities for you and your children, just head to the beach and into the waves equipped with a snorkel or diving mask, and see what you can discover beneath the surface.

Why Sri Lanka is so great for families

Sri Lankans adore kids and are always ready to go the extra mile to make sure that younger visitors feel just as comfortable as grown-ups. Family holidays in Sri Lanka offer a great variety of outdoor pursuits, from snorkelling to elephant-riding, and a range of excellent, family-focused attractions. All of this, combined with a distinctive culture and Sri Lankans' enviably relaxed lifestyle, ensures that tired families can leave their worries at home and get on with making the most of everything this stunning destination has to offer.
