Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa

6/10 Okay

"Excellent location. Room and bathroom were basic but clean and the rooms without lake view were very dark. Staff were excellent but overworked as hotel was clearly understaffed. Special mention for Ahmed at front desk and Matthew at bar and chamber staff who were very accommodating despite the limited resources. Breakfast was underwhelming, badly organised with little variety and laughable choices of pastries and an abundance of cereals at the expense of any other option. The fruit basket had the same three pieces of fruit throughout our stay. The cereal bowls were either wet or had the previous day’s breakfast stuck on them. Any orders for eggs had to be requested and some were subject to an extra charge which is unheard of when breakfast is included in a high class establishment. The windowsill in the dining room was a feast of dead flies, the carpet full of crumbs from the previous night and most of the upholstery on the chairs was stained and because of the staffing issues breakfast orders were extremely slow . The carpet throughout was dark and dusty and there was a musty aroma on all floors. The best maintained area of the hotel was the Elemis Spa. Management were obviously cutting costs into the wrong places: only offering us one key card per room, the lack of extensive amenities in the bathroom (by request only), no slippers in the rooms and the absence of room phones and inability to call front desk. Overall could have been more consistent."

"Very old fashioned room desperately in need of a refurbishment and a deep clean. Would suit a couple in their 80’s as that was the decor. Breakfast was nice, but when my wife ordered poached eggs on toast she got 1 egg on 1/2 piece of toast, was pretty funny as it looked sad on the plate. Staff were lovely"

"Lovely hotel brilliantly situated in Bodensee. On a hill with views down the lake. Getting to the Lake steamers is just a walk down the lawn The staff are excellent friendly and helpful Rooms are spacious. Any negatives. The menu in the Bistro was a bit limited and breakfast range could have been more imaginative eg. fruit salad instead of a bowl of chopped melon A bit surprised to be charged £15 a night for parking. If I’m paying £200 a night B&B I would expect parking to be included! A few more comfortable chairs to sit on on the lawn would have been appreciated."

Cragwood Country House Hotel

"Where do I start ! a quintessential English country hotel. The grounds were immaculately kept and I have paid good money to visit gardens not as spectacular as these. The staff were extremely friendly and couldn’t do enough for you a special shout out for Brad and for Helen in the assistance they gave us. The food in the restaurant was exceptional and although we didn’t have bar food, what we saw coming out looked extremely good. The only comment I would make is that if you were staying for a number of days the menu doesn’t change that often and is small. I can especially recommend their cooked breakfasts. There was nothing we could fault with the hotel. It’s position, it’s condition and it staff were all excellent."

Keswick Country House Hotel

"This hotel is in an excellent location in Keswick and the staff were very helpful. The bar area was large and relaxing. However, the room, apart from the carpets, was tired and needed refurbishment. There was a black mould around the wooden windows. The shower unit was yellow with age. Even the toilet paper was thin and cheap. The breakfast was adequate, but the orange juice in particular, was like coloured water. Given the much higher price compared to local b&bs, we were disappointed with the overall experience."

"We , 4pax , stayed for 4 nights and the standard was 1st class , nothing less. Excellent and a tribute to the Leeu Collection. Will definitely want to return soon. Suggestion, parking should be possibly better controlled and available for Hotel guests first. Maybe leverage the Spa and treatment offerings on this stunning property. Thanks to the excellent , professional and friendly staff."
