As the name suggests, Vahrenwald-List is an amalgamation of the areas of Vahrenwald and List. Its history as a farming village dates back to at least 1304, and by the nineteenth century it was a prosperous manufacturing centre. Today it offers a quieter Hannover base with easy access to the city centre.
Vahrenwald-List’s landmarks include the evangelical Lutheran churches of Lukaskirche and Markus Church, and the remaining buildings of the former Military Riding Institute. Welfenplatz is a green square which originated as a military parade ground, and Vahrenwalder Park is a pleasant expanse of meadows, trees and pergolas, with a large playground.
While Vahrenwald-List doesn’t have the range of attractions you’ll find in central Hannover, music fans will enjoy MusikZentrum, an educational venue for music students that offers a varied calendar of performances and other events. For shopping, head to the thoroughfare of Lister Meile, which runs just south of List and offers a blend of German brands, major international chains and local shops selling traditional souvenirs and gifts.
Vahrenwald-List hotels give you a quieter location and some competitive prices, but they still put you within easy reach of Hannover’s main attractions. Don’t miss the formal garden grandeur of Herrenhäuser Gärten, the partially ruined Aegidienkirche, and the impressive New Town Hall, whose dome has superb panoramic views.
Vahrenwald-List has a wide choice of snacking and dining options, with eateries offering everything from regional and German specialities to the major global cuisines. And all the restaurants, cafes and bars of central Hannover are a brisk stroll or short metro ride away. While you’re here do try some of Saxony’s specialities, such as sauerbraten pot roast and klitscher potato pancakes.
