Hannover’s main international Airport lies just to the north of the city centre, a 15 minute ride away on the metro. You can catch a direct flight to Hanover from a number of UK cities including London, Birmingham and Manchester, and Hannover Airport offers regular routes to many major cities in Germany and across Europe. British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa are just a few of the airlines who run scheduled flights to Hannover.
Hannover Airport is situated in the suburb of Langenhagen, about 7 miles (11km) to the north of Hannover city centre. It opened in 1952 and today has three busy terminals. One of the few German airports to operate 24 hours a day, it has quick access to Hannover’s central train station, which is an important transport hub for northern Germany. There is a wide range of shopping and eating options at Hannover Airport, and there are several convenient hotels both within the airport complex and nearby.
With a flight time of just 90 minutes from the UK and a good choice of airlines, flights to Hannover are a good option for family visitors. Once you’re at Hannover Airport, there are good public transport links and plenty of car hire companies, so continuing your journey as a family is easy – and when it’s time to take your return flight, Hannover Airport’s play areas and interactive aviation museum will keep kids entertained while you wait.
Hannover is the capital of the Lower Saxony region in northern Germany, a city whose roots stretching back to at least the Middle Ages. Follow the Rote Faden (Red Thread) walking route to tick off some of the city’s key historic sights, including the towering Market Church, the semi-ruined Aegidienkirche, and the two very different town halls – the older is a traditional half-timbered building, while the newer is an extravagant civic palace whose dome offers panoramic city views.

Head to the Ernst August Galerie by the central train station for modern fashion, gadgets and gifts, or book a flight to Hannover in December to enjoy the atmospheric Christmas markets that spread out around the old town.
