Rise early to witness unforgettable sunrises, explore underwater scuba diving trails and stretch out on sandy beaches in this tropical territory.

The U.S. Virgin Islands enjoy an incredible setting in the middle of warm, sun-soaked Caribbean waters. Across the territory’s three main islands, discover colourful houses in historic towns, play golf on scenic fairways and dig your toes into the sand on stunning beaches.

Previously known as the Danish West Indies, the islands were purchased by the United States in 1917. Today, they remain a U.S. territory and Virgin Islanders are automatically granted U.S. citizenship. The tourism industry has grown significantly since the 1960s and is now a major part of the islands’ economy.

Take time to explore the largest of the islands, St. Croix. See the colonial houses in historic towns such as Christiansted and Frederiksted. Watch the sunrise from Point Udall, a monument marking the easternmost point in the United States. For a unique underwater experience, explore Buck Island’s underwater trails and beautiful coral reefs.

Head north to St. Thomas for pristine beaches and luxury accommodation. This is a popular option for honeymooning couples searching for a romantic, laid-back vibe. Experience stunning views of the island from the top of Blackbeard’s Castle and stretch out on a sun lounger on the white sands of Magens Bay. To learn about native Caribbean plants, stroll through the botanical gardens at St. Peter Greathouse.

Just a short hop to the east of St. Thomas is the beautiful St. John. Have a barbecue on Hawksnest Beach and try to spot starfish in Leinster Bay. Explore Virgin Islands National Park to see the Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins, or hike the Reef Bay Trail through dense forests. Adventure sports such as windsurfing and kayaking are popular in the scenic Cinnamon Bay.

Getting to the the U.S. Virgin Islands is easy. Many cruise ships dock in St. Thomas, while the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas serves multiple international destinations. Frequent ferries run between the islands. Once you’re on land, rent a car to avoid taxi fares and explore at your leisure.
