The islands’ warm weather entices people to escape cold winters in the U.S. mainland. On St. Thomas , the protected harbour of Charlotte Amalie comes alive when cruise ships arrive. Walk along the streets to enjoy duty-free shopping. Outside of town, Magens Bay offers 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) of soft sand and clear water for family enjoyment.
Take a ferry across the 4-mile (7-kilometre) stretch of sea from Red Hook on eastern St. Thomas to Cruz Bay on St. John . More than half of the 20 square miles (5,000 hectares) of St. John is Virgin Islands National Park. Read the subsurface markers as you snorkel along the 225-yard (206-metre) Trunk Bay underwater snorkeling trail to observe schools of colourful fish, swaying sea fan coral and occasional sea turtles. Visit the relics of the island’s 18th-century sugar-producing era at the Cinnamon Bay Factory, Peace Hill Windmill and Annaberg Plantation .
St. Croix is the largest of the islands. Rent a jeep to explore the island’s rugged interior. Learn about the Danish West Indian history of the islands in Frederiksted at Lawaetz Family Museum and Whim Plantation Museum. Sample Caribbean rum at the local Cruzan Distillery. St. Croix is known for the excellent selection of fresh produce at its farmers markets. Purchase ingredients to cook your own feast or enjoy fresh seafood or varied international meals at the island’s more than 120 restaurants. Boat to Buck Island Reef National Monument for snorkeling and scuba diving.
The U.S. Virgin Islands offer numerous options for a romantic proposal, wedding or honeymoon. Remember to drive your “just married” rental car on the left side of the road.
