Salzburg Attractions

It doesn’t matter which way you turn in Salzburg, the city is overflowing with architectural gems and you will always find something to see or do. As well as being the birthplace of Mozart, the old town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and it also provided the backdrop for The Sound of Music. Follow in the footsteps of the Von Trapp family and take a tour of the areas where the film was made or experience the Salzburg Festival – a cultural highlight which turns Salzburg into a giant stage every year with operas, dramas and concerts to appeal to all ages.

Areas & Neighbourhoods in Salzburg

Altstadt – The old town is veritable feast for history lovers, comprising many medieval and baroque buildings. Home to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, central Europe’s largest intact fortress, and Mozart’s birthplace, the Geburtshaus on Getreidegasse, it offers visitors a combination of rich culture and fine shopping. It is a magical mix of old and new, framed by the many spires of Salzburg’s churches.

Nonntal – This district forms part of the old town but is less frequented by tourists despite its proximity. It is a great place to take a stroll if you want to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet, marvel at tree-lined streets with expensive homes and get a sneak peek of how the other half live.

Neustadt – The Red Bull Arena was officially opened in 2003 and is home to the Salzburg football team. You don’t have to be a fan to pick up a ticket and enjoy a match there or take a tour of the stadium. If you prefer the thrill of gambling, take a chance at the Casino Salzburg, located in the baroque Klessheim Palace just next door.

Salzkammergut –This area just outside of Salzburg is one of the most popular in Austria. Take a day trip out from Salzburg and stop in the village of Fuschi. From here you can hike around Lake Fuschi or head up Mount Schober for some splendid views. The Schafberbahn Railway, which also featured in The Sound of Music, is popular with tourists and locals alike.

Things to See in Salzburg

You can’t turn around in the old town without spotting an architectural masterpiece to photograph but if you have to pick one thing to see the elaborate Mirabell Palace should be it. The Hellbrun Palace on the outskirts of Salzburg is also a jewel to behold, with the sweeping broad park a great way to enjoy a little gentle outdoor exercise. The Residenzplatz is the place in which to savour a coffee, marvel at the New Residence Palace and admire the Residence Fountain.

Things to Do in Salzburg

Get your walking shoes on and wander through the streets of the old town, enjoying both sides of the city on the River Salzach. Make the most of the extraordinary architecture and, if that’s not enough to satisfy you, pop into one of the many museums in the area where you can retrace the history of Mozart or opt to visit the Natural History Museum, featuring 30 aquariums, a zoo and a science centre.
