Holbox – Holbox is the only town on the island. The Lagoon – The Isla Holbox is close to where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet. As a result, its waters generally appear quite dark, though this varies from beach to beach. The lagoon separates the Isla Holbox from the mainland. Its waters are so dark that the Maya named it Holbox, or ‘Black Hole’.

Punta Mosquito – Less busy that the main stretch of sand closest to the town, Punta Mosquito is a great place for a relaxing afternoon of swimming and sunbathing. The beach is also popular with flamingos, so make sure you bring your binoculars if you want to get a good look at these flamboyant local inhabitants.

Punta Coco – Another of Isla Holbox’s outstanding beaches, Punta Coco is quiet, picturesque and easy to reach by golf cart from the island’s town. A fantastic spot to watch the sunrise, Punta Coco is the perfect destination for an unforgettable evening dip.

Isla Holbox’s main attraction is its stunning natural setting. The dark and mysterious lagoon, the white sandy beaches and the carefully protected environment attract visitors from around the world and are all well worth a look during your stay on the Island. From June to September, visitors flock to the island to see the enormous whale sharks that can be found in the local waters. Able to grow to lengths of up to 60 feet, these colossal creatures are the biggest fish in the world. Another popular sight is Isla Pajaros, or Bird Island.
