Boasting endless beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and a wealth of colourful Caribbean buildings, Isla Holbox is one of Mexico’s best kept secrets. Spend sun-drenched days relaxing on the island’s sands, take a boat out into the warm waters of the Yucatan to search for whale shark or, if you’re looking for something a little more action-packed, try your hand at kite boarding at one of the picturesque local bays.
Holbox – Holbox is the only town on the island. Enjoy freshly prepared seafood at one of the local restaurants, relax on the town’s beautiful beach or spend a few hours exploring its bright and characterful streets. As Isla Holbox is car free, the best way to get around town is by foot or by hiring a golf cart.
The Lagoon – The Isla Holbox is close to where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet. As a result, its waters generally appear quite dark, though this varies from beach to beach. The lagoon separates the Isla Holbox from the mainland. Its waters are so dark that the Maya named it Holbox, or ‘Black Hole’.
Punta Mosquito – Less busy that the main stretch of sand closest to the town, Punta Mosquito is a great place for a relaxing afternoon of swimming and sunbathing. The beach is also popular with flamingos, so make sure you bring your binoculars if you want to get a good look at these flamboyant local inhabitants.
Punta Coco – Another of Isla Holbox’s outstanding beaches, Punta Coco is quiet, picturesque and easy to reach by golf cart from the island’s town. A fantastic spot to watch the sunrise, Punta Coco is the perfect destination for an unforgettable evening dip.
Isla Holbox’s main attraction is its stunning natural setting. The dark and mysterious lagoon, the white sandy beaches and the carefully protected environment attract visitors from around the world and are all well worth a look during your stay on the Island. From June to September, visitors flock to the island to see the enormous whale sharks that can be found in the local waters. Able to grow to lengths of up to 60 feet, these colossal creatures are the biggest fish in the world. Another popular sight is Isla Pajaros, or Bird Island. Packed full of birds, many of which are endangered, the island is a must see if you’re a fan of our feathered friends.
As well as observing whale sharks from the comfort of a boat, visitors to Isla Holbox can also swim with these enormous creatures. Excursions can be arranged from Holbox town and take place throughout the summer months. Another popular water based activity is kite surfing. Isla Holbox boasts a safe learners beach with excellent conditions, making it a great place to try your hand at the sport. Alternatively, fill your days by swimming and sunbathing at one of the picturesque beaches, exploring the island by golf cart or dining in one of Isla Holbox’s many atmospheric eateries.
