Find hotels in Sunouchi from £29

The best area to stay in Sunouchi is around the Honmachi district, particularly for those seeking a balance of convenience and local character.

Honmachi is the heart of Sunouchi, known for its well-preserved traditional merchant houses, some of which have been converted into shops, cafes, and guesthouses. The main street, Honmachi-dori, is very walkable and offers a glimpse into the town's history. You'll find a selection of local eateries and craft shops here, creating a pleasant atmosphere for an evening stroll.

Couples will find Honmachi particularly appealing due to its romantic setting and the opportunity to stay in a renovated traditional machiya (townhouse). Many of these offer a unique and intimate experience, often with a private garden or traditional Japanese bath. It's also convenient for visiting nearby attractions like the Sunouchi Castle ruins or taking a scenic walk along the Nagara River.

For solo travellers, staying near the Sunouchi Station area, just a short walk from Honmachi, offers excellent connectivity. This area provides easy access to local buses and trains, making day trips to other parts of Gifu Prefecture straightforward.

The best time to visit Sunouchi is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant and the natural scenery is at its most beautiful.

Spring in Sunouchi is particularly appealing for those who appreciate natural beauty, as the cherry blossoms typically bloom from late March to early April. The hillsides and riverbanks transform into a sea of pink and white, offering stunning photo opportunities and a gentle climate for exploring.

Autumn offers equally beautiful scenery, with the leaves changing to vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, usually from late October to mid-November. The air is crisp and clear, making it an excellent time for hiking and enjoying the outdoor hot springs without the summer humidity. This season is ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway amidst picturesque landscapes.

While summer (June to August) can be warm and humid, it's a good time for those interested in local festivals and water activities.
