"We would highly, highly recommend Ichirino Kogen Hotel Roan.
Dinner was phenomenal - some of the best food we had on our one month trip travelling around Japan. The variety of dishes, the freshness of the food, the beautiful presentation, and the harmony of the flavor combinations stood out to us. It was really delicious. The restaurant itself was comfortable and lovely. It was a little cold at first, but the grill warmed the room while the sake warmed us from the inside :)

This is very much an onsen experience with built in breakfast and dinner. It forces you to slow down, which is exactly what you need. The breakfast and dinner timings can be a little prescriptive but understandable given that all guests must be accommodated. The onsen is beautiful and the overall setting is beautiful. The pick up/drop service from the local bus stand is a wonderful perk.

Amazing location for Shirakawa Go but away from the crowds up in the mountains the staff are great, food amazing, rooms basic but spotless. The onsen are great and the free guided walk was perfect.
The shuttle bus to Shirakawa Go is brilliant, we were able to choose our drop off and pick up times.

The hotel is well located 3 min from the train station. 1 min from the bus station and 10 min walk from the old town the main attraction.
The room was spacy (suite style) and had a washing/dryer machine in the kitchen.
The bed was comfortable and the bathroom OK
Priced well and one last piece of advice:
If you are planning to go to Shirakawa-go do NOT book accommodation there. Leave Takayama early enough (bus ticket-buy a day or two in advance) and either come back to Takayama the same night or...

In a holiday full of excellent hotels this one felt like a standout stay - a cute little building not far from the station (and, more importantly, the fish market, with genuinely lovely staff and excellent amenities. We arrived quite early, too early to check in, and were given a drink and told about the hotel before leaving our bags to explore. The room was delightful, a good size, a well stocked fridge of complementary drinks, a unit to dry clothes as part of the shower and a comfortable bed....

What a treasure this is. Lovely rooms with comfortable futon mattresses on raised tatami mats.
Clean bathrooms with smaller shower cubical.
Traditional Japanese bento breakfasts were very tasty and rice also available.

Don't worry about the location it's a short affordable taxi both ways from the station they booked our return when we booked in. We walked by the river into town it was lovely. The room was double the size of any room we have stayed in. Beds super comfortable. Staff great.
Highly recommend thanks

It is the perfect spot to explore Takayama and surroundings. Modern, well located, and with an on-site onsen! The room was a bit smaller than we expected but it was very comfortable for 2 people.
