Fittingly for a city so connected to the sea, Spinnaker Tower was designed and built in the 21st century with boats as its inspiration. It is named after the triangular sail at the front of a yacht. The resemblance is uncanny: a white needle protruding into the sky with an elegant line curving around it as if it is being blown by the wind. Rise more than 550 feet (170 metres) above Portsmouth for unbeatable views of the historic city before coming back to ground level for shopping and exploring. Take a speedy lift to one of the three viewing decks, where you can see for miles around. Look south to spot the Isle of Wight and north for the hills of Hampshire. On the first deck, use the touch screen information points to find out more information about what you can see in every direction. Listen to one of the complimentary audio guides to understand the sights you’re seeing. Step out onto the dizzying Sky Deck and walk on floors of glass across a huge drop below. On the second deck, stop for a snack at the Café in the Clouds, where you can have coffee and a pastry in front of miles of breathtaking landscapes. Wrap up warm for the third deck, which offers open-air views, with telescopes to help you see even farther. (470 reviews) This property is close to Paddington Station and is how we arrived in London. We arrived early and the staff was willing to hold our luggage for us. Incidentally, Expedia says to call ahead or contact the property. There’s no need for that. The property is prepared for you as long as you book through Expedia. The room was small, directly above the ground floor pub. A couple of nights were noisy for a while, but the pub closes at midnight so it wasn’t really an issue. Our room was small but clean. The restroom was really small but adequate. I couldn’t figure out the thermostat and couldn’t cool the room enough even though it is air conditioned. The bathroom got pretty warm because of poor ventilation. That was the biggest negative. The breakfast provided was what I would classify as light with the only warm option as toast, tea, and coffee. Still, it was fine and it was enough to start the day. The staff was always pleasant and welcoming. There is a bus stop near the hotel. It was convenient and we used that method of transportation often. The Edgeware Street Station is about an 8-minute walk down the road and we used that tube stop quite a bit. The neighborhood is a near a working-class commercial area and safe enough for us—we experienced no issues. This was a good value. It’s not fancy or big but I’d go there again. Not with kids, though. Just me and my wife. The barn door to the bathroom did not work properly and it was right across from our bed. The front desk staff was helpful. The housekeeping service was okay. It took 30-45 mins for an iron and a bottle of water. The lobby was beautiful. If they renovated the rooms like the lobby, I would come back.
