Guatapé is a colourful town located about two hours east of Medellín, known for its unique 'zocalos' – brightly painted bas-reliefs adorning the lower parts of its buildings. The town sits beside the vast Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir, offering stunning lakeside views and opportunities for water activities. The most prominent landmark is El Peñol, a massive granite rock with 740 steps to the summit, providing panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and islands. It's a popular spot for travellers looking for scenic beauty and a taste of Colombian culture.

For couples, Guatapé offers a romantic escape with its picturesque streets and serene lake setting. You can take a boat trip on the reservoir, enjoy a meal at a waterside restaurant, or simply wander through the charming town centre, admiring the unique architecture. The climb up El Peñol can be a shared adventure, rewarded with breathtaking views.

Jardín is a more traditional and less touristy town, located in the coffee-growing region southwest of Medellín, about three hours away. It's characterised by its well-preserved historic architecture, with a large central plaza dominated by a neo-Gothic basilica. The town's slower pace of life and surrounding green hills dotted with coffee farms offer a tranquil experience. You'll find many locals gathered in the main square, enjoying coffee and conversation.

Solo travellers often appreciate Jardín for its authentic feel and opportunities to connect with local life. The town is small enough to explore on foot, and there are plenty of hiking trails in the nearby countryside, including paths to waterfalls and coffee plantations.

The best time to go to Santa Fe is during the dry season, which runs from December to March, and also in July and August.

During these months, you'll experience less rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the town's historic architecture and enjoying outdoor activities. The weather is generally warm and pleasant, with average temperatures around 28°C (82°F) during the day. This period is superb for those who want to comfortably wander through the cobbled streets, visit the Puente de Occidente, or simply relax by a hotel pool.

The shoulder seasons, particularly April to June and September to November, can also be a good option if you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices. While there might be more rain showers during these times, they often don't last all day, and you can still enjoy many attractions.
