The lobby area is pretty nice. Lots of great ambiance. Because of where the hotel is located, you may not get any view or it will be obstructed. We had a small window and had a partial view of the castle but mostly we looked at a side of a building. The minibar was well stocked. Room was clean. Bed was great. They offer a turn down service, if you want it. I did not have a good experience in the hotel bar or the restaurant, which was really disappointing. I ended up leaving the bar because I got tired and annoyed waiting for a server. I went to a pub nearby instead. Service in the restaurant was also mediocre/average. I thought the male hostess was either naturally really hyped up or on something (I thought the latter). I found the restaurant food to be just okay. I was really looking forward to be impressed given some of the reviews but it was underwhelming. I had the king scallops. I found them overcooked and small. Appy and bread were also mediocre. My partner had the ravioli which he thought was good. Overall, I was disappointed in both the bar and the restaurant. I would choose a different hotel the next time I’m in Edinburgh. Biggest issue was that the hotel only had one working lift (elevator) for ten floors - you can imagine how busy that one elevator was! Breakfast was OK, though the eggs benedict was luke-warm rather than hot. Decent continental breakfast selection, but mini-croissants were not fresh, and there was a distinct lack of any fresh bread (only sliced bread for toasting) - a few baguettes would make a difference! The room was pretty spacious and comfortable and reasonably quiet. It looked a little tired in places, but nothing too troubling. The staircase used in place of the elevator service was somewhat grubby in places and not what would be expected of a 4\* hotel. The exit/entry off Calton Road is a bonus for easy access to Edinburgh Waverley Station. The gym, although small in size, was well-equipped with free weights, and the steam room in the spa was a real bonus." So nothing to change into and not even able to brush my teeth. I found it the next morning sitting on the desk in reception. Barely an apology. I asked for a part refund, was told the manager would call me and NOTHING. Not impressed to say the least.
