Tembo House Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"Breakfast was nice. This hotel is near the sights in Stone Town. Walk through the narrow shopping streets to the slave market in just a few minutes. Freddie Mercury residence is just around the corner from the hotel. Staff are friendly and helpful, although I did have to ask 4 times to get the TV working."

Tembo Palace Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"Great place to stay; I didn't expect any kind of view and it is in the midst of other buildings. A short walk from the main hotel, where you have access to all of the the amenities including breakfast, pools, private beach, etc. The room was a bit bare bones for furniture, but what was there was local and good quality. No mosquito netting, but they say that they spray, although we did find one. We used the ceiling fans all night which should also keep them away. The bathroom was beautifully tiled. Great staff at the main hotel and there is security at the entrance to the Palace Hotel. Biggest downside - uneven stairs and no elevator."

8/10 Good

"Overall the experience was positive. We arrived at midnight and staff was still readily available to assist. They even left a late night snack in our room upon arrival. If you are seeking a more laid back resort, it certainly fits the bill. I hoped for more activities available on site. The resort went into quiet mode after 10pm. Also I noticed they had a notification board for information but having daily itineraries either available in print in the room or on the tv would have been helpful. Despite the staff being overall helpful, it did appear to be perferential treatment towards certain guests. On more than one occasion I sat in the dining room awaiting acknowledgement and service while other guests who arrived after me received prompt service. The rooms were well maintained and our room attendant decorated our bed daily which was appreciated. I wished snacks were available late night. Having 24 hour bar service with no food options was a disappointment. The daily buffet selections were nice. Special shout out to our tour guide Ali, and bar attendant Anderson."

Melia Zanzibar

10/10 Excellent

"My stay at this resort was absolutely amazing! From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with warm hospitality, professional service, and a beautiful, relaxing atmosphere. The rooms were luxurious, clean, and comfortable, with excellent attention to detail. The food was delicious, the facilities were outstanding, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure every moment was special. The resort offers the perfect combination of luxury, comfort, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences. I highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a world-class getaway. Truly a five-star experience, and I would definitely love to return!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Ng'Ambo?

For most visitors to Ng'Ambo, the best area to stay is Stone Town, which is the historic core of the city.

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its winding alleyways, coral stone buildings, and intricately carved wooden doors. It's a compact and walkable area, with landmarks like the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, and the House of Wonders all within easy reach. The main streets like Creek Road and Kenyatta Road define the edges of its most popular sections.

Couples often find Stone Town ideal for a romantic trip. The narrow streets are great for leisurely strolls, discovering hidden courtyards and rooftop restaurants with views of the Indian Ocean. The evening food market at Forodhani Gardens offers a unique dining experience right on the waterfront.

Solo travellers will also appreciate Stone Town for its accessibility and the sheer number of guesthouses and boutique hotels.

When is the best time to go to Ng'Ambo?

The best time to visit Ng'Ambo is during the dry seasons, which run from December to February and again from June to October.

These months offer consistently sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for exploring the historic Stone Town and relaxing on the nearby beaches. You'll find less humidity and generally calm waters for activities like snorkelling and diving.

Travellers looking for a beach holiday will appreciate the December to February period. The weather is superb for sunbathing and swimming, and the sea breezes keep things comfortable. It's a popular time, so booking your accommodation and any excursions in advance is a good idea.

For those interested in exploring the cultural and historical sites of Ng'Ambo, the June to October dry season is excellent. The cooler temperatures make walking around Stone Town more comfortable, and you'll still enjoy plenty of sunshine for day trips to spice farms or other attractions.
