Pocket Guide: New Delhi

India’s capital city is a massive metropolis located on the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It has several districts, with the newer part of the city planned by British architect Edwin Lutyens in the 20th century. The old part of the city is over 5,000 years old and filled with many historical sites, though most upmarket accommodation options are located in Central Delhi.

Don’t Miss

There is a wide selection of attractions all over New Delhi and tourists could spend days wandering around its parks and museums, and visiting its main sights.

One of the city’s most popular attractions is the Red Fort, a magnificent red sandstone fort that was completed in 1648. The fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and contains a number of buildings, including Diwan-i-Am, (Hall of Public Audience), Khas Mahal, (Private Palace) and Mumtaz Mahal, (Jewel Palace). Today, the only entrance in to the fort is the Lahore Gate that sits on the west side.

Humayun's Tomb is one of New Delhi’s few UNESCO World Heritage sites and was the first Mughal structure in the city. The tomb of Humayun is the centrepiece of the magnificent building, which also houses the octagonal tomb of Iza Khan. Another heritage site not to miss is the Qutub complex that dates back to the Slave Dynasty. There are a number of structures in the complex, though the 72.5 metre high minaret Qutub Minar is the most famous.

Those interested in culture will find a great selection of museums in New Delhi, including the National Museum, National Science Centre and the Kiran Nadar. There are also numerous religious buildings in the city, like the impressive Bahá'í Lotus Temple, the Hindu Laxminarayan Temple, the Sikh Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Jama Masjid.

Restaurants and Bars

There is no shortage of places to eat in New Delhi, with everything from street stalls to fine dining restaurants being offered. Bengali Market is a great place to find budget meals, while the best Indian meals are often served in the high-end hotels. There are also plenty of international options like Japanese, Thai, Italian and Chinese. Nightlife is buzzing in New Delhi, with visitors being able to go to a nightclub, a hookah bar, a chic lounge or a hole-in-the-wall.

Shopping

New Delhi is a shopper’s paradise, home to traditional markets, modern shopping malls and handicraft shops. Dilli Haat is the best place to shop for crafts, while Karol Bagh is the place to go shopping for cheap clothing. Markets like Paraganj, Janpath and Chandni Chowk are great for bargain shopping and wholesale goods, though Connaught Place and the Central Market are a bit more comfortable.
