High Mountain Getaway
The Rarus is located 3/4 of a mile east of the continental divide at 10,800ft in the San Isabel National Forest on private property. The property is fully off-grid but we do have hot water for showers and dishes. There is no cell phone service at the cabin. Internet is available for emergency use only. We are remotely located and require a high clearance 4WD vehicle to get down our steep and rocky driveway.
Ride your ATV, UTV, or dirt bike right from the cabin. If you would like to get away from it all, this is the place for your ultimate mountain vacation.
Please Note:
*There is a caretaker that may come to check on the solar system but only if needed (which is rare) and we will let you know in advance.
*The pictured hot tub is not included in the rental.

After 2 nights we wished we could have stayed longer. The driveway is no joke as far as needing 4x4 high clearance. Beautiful cabin and we are grateful to have stayed there.

We stayed here for 5 nights, beautiful!!! The house was clean and had everything we needed. It is tricky getting up and down the drive way but we knew that going in. Can’t wait to go back and stay here again.

My friends and I were looking for a peaceful, quiet getaway for Fourth of July and boy did we find it! We absolutely loved staying at this cabin Southwest of Buena Vista. We hiked, had endless conversation out on the front porch while listening to the river, sat in front of the fire… It was amazing! Such a great place to get in some really wonderful hiking with beautiful views and not too far from civilization where you can catch some white water rafting. We love the peacefulness. It is super remote! But Erica was generous enough to meet us on the road and guide us into the cabin. So helpful! It’s also not so far that you can’t get to things easily. We would definitely stay again!

This property unfortunately was falsely advertised. A beautiful cabin and yes remote, but there are 4 camp sites surrounding the cabin, so not nearly as secluded and private as we expected. If no one is staying in those campsites, you may have a better chance of being alone but no blinds in some rooms in the cabin so it felt awkward. Hot tub was not working and was shown in pictures on the listing. Needed to boldly state this was out of order. We chose this spot thinking we would be alone and unfortunately that didn’t end up being the case.
Better fit cabin for families or large groups who could rent as a whole. Great for ATV’s and good hiking.

This cabin suited us pretty well. The log cabin with rock fireplace had the exact look we wanted. It was out of town and in the mountains and in the middle of nature like we wanted as well. We were only bothered a little by the off grid part…generator had to be used a few times to supply enough power and water for our group of 6 adults. The evenings were long with only having the provided dvds to watch and no internet service. That would be a huge plus if internet and TV would have been better, but we were warned of that when we booked. A hot tub was onsite, but we weren’t able to use it, bummer as well. Cabin was conveniently located near trails for us to ride our side by sides. We never moved our vehicle the whole week, we were able to find enough trails for the whole week, but they were very rough and not what we expected. We won’t go back to this area again, because of all of the big rocks on the trails. But, we did see a ton of wildlife which was fantastic! We saw several moose, elk, mule deer and even a few mountain goats! Very cool! Our on-site host was friendly and accommodating.

Absolutely my favorite place out of 100s of vrbo properties stayed in. Gorgeous, homey, ultra private, comfortable, just fantastic. Would buy it in a minute if for sale. A+++

Amazing little cabin! Would recommend stopping before and bringing groceries with you. A little bit of a drive up the mountain but still terrific and awesome experience. Host was so helpful and kind!

We enjoyed our stay. The driveway was just as she told us and we were glad we had a 4 wheel drive. It rained every day until the last day; wish the sun would have shone a little more.

I booked the cabin for a family relaxation and reset vacation. We brought UTVs to ride trails. We were able bring our 4x4 pickup and car trailer down to the property without an issue. The cabin was perfect! We had plenty of room for two adults, a teenager and two kids. We brought our food ahead of time, per Erica’s advice and used the grill a lot. The kids explored and loved the hammock! In the evenings we watched the chipmunks and deer, and played board games. Manette was wonderful, she helped with any questions we had and had great stories about the area and history of the cabin! Would love to visit again!

I've stayed here many times over the years and it's just awesome. Period. Make sure you understand where it is and how the roads and driveway, off grid etc is before you go and complain, if that's not what you want, find somewhere else...if it is, there is no better place I've ever been.

Beautiful remote mountain getaway! Awesome log cabin on river. Owner said we should see a mouse during stay, and we did— crossing the creek one morning right outside our cabin! Awesome. Also saw fox, deer, rabbits and chipmunks. Great trails for ATVs and Jeep’s to go exploring. Manette, our host, was so sweet and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay so much. As another reviewer stated, bring your supplies as trips into town are not just a jump into the truck and be there. It’s a good hour trip on mountain roads. Salida is well worth seeing though. We had a great day trip there. The elevation is very high, about 11,000 feet. Hard for us lowland Texans to do a lot of hiking, but enjoyed all the beauty from our Polaris and cabin porches.

We wanted a truly “get away from it all” experience and this property did not disappoint. It is totally off the grid but with most of the amenity of daily living. We enjoyed our stay immensely and plan on returning in the future.

Our family had an amazing time at this property. Description was on point. The property was secluded and off the grid but had all the comforts of home. We stayed with three small children who enjoyed the small streams and calm area of the river. The host was friendly and respectful. We enjoyed her wonderful stories about the mining history of the area. The property manager was easy to contact and responded quickly.
As mentioned in the description, the driveway is steep and rocky but there is a large area at the top park a trailer and ride your UTV in. We hope to come back next year!

Incredible cabin/home that is truly off the grid. The house is amazing and the location is ideal for a quiet get away. It is worth mentioning that the drive into Buena Vista or Salida is a little over one hour. Amazing place, really cool experience.

My husband and I have been coming to Colorado for many years on vacation. The location and cabin were by far the best we have ever found. The creek running right beside the cabin was gorgeous. You can lay in the bed and star gaze at night and then wake up and watch the deer. We will be back next year! The cabin was very nice and had great views from every room. A perfect place for anyone who wants to relax.
