Marken is a peninsula located in the Marker lake that is connected to the Dutch mainland by a dyke. Marken is a perfect place for a short holiday, bursting with Dutch heritage and beautiful nature.
Although there is only a small amount of hotels in Marken, the touristic city of Volendam has a lot more on offer. Volendam is only a twenty-minute drive from Marken, and if you don’t have a car there is also a ferry that will take you, and your bike if needed, there. Choosing Volendam will give you a bit more sightseeing to do, but staying in Marken means nature is right outside your door.
Because of its small size, Marken is easily discovered in a weekend or a 5-day trip. It is the perfect place to rent a bike and cycle around as there are very few cars and everything is more accessible by bike. Marken is a beautiful small peninsula where you can explore Dutch heritage. A lot of its architecture has stayed the same and most of the peninsula is still controlled by nature. You can either discover the peninsula by yourself, or hire a guide. A few sights you don’t want to miss are the clog factory and the church in the middle of town. Another great sight to see is the lighthouse at the edge of the peninsula.
When you’re hungry you can walk to the beautiful marina and have some lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants there. The marina itself is a great place to hang around for a bit, as there is always something happening and it has some very pretty yachts and ships docked. Close the the marina is also a store that sells traditional Dutch garb.
Marken has two museums, one is called the Marker Museum and is located in the centre of town. The Marker Museum displays the history of Marken. Although this is not an official museum we’ll count it as one: the Sijtje Boes ‘Kijkhuisje’. Sixty years ago Sijtje Boes opened up her house for tourists to see how people from Marken lived and it is still there, definitely worth a visit.
If you still have time left after discovering Marken, you could always go discover other cities. Volendam or Amsterdam for instance are only 20 minutes away and are great cities to visit for a day. Volendam in particular is easily accessible on both roads and water, and is a very similar city to Marken, as it also displays a lot of Dutch heritage.
The choice for hotels around Marken is quite big, especially if you also include Volendam. Each hotel has its own qualities and specifications, so make sure to pick a hotel that matches your preferences. Staying inside Marken or staying closer to Volendam makes a big difference. Either way, you’re in for a great holiday!
