Pocket Guide: Marken

Marken Hotel guide

Marken is a peninsula located on the lush Marker Lake and is a perfect place for a short holiday, bursting with Dutch heritage and beautiful nature. This is a perfect spot to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Hotels in Marken

Although there is only a small number of hotels on the Marken peninsula, the touristic city of Volendam has a lot more on offer. Volendam is only a twenty-minute drive from Marken, and if you don’t have a car, there is a ferry. Choosing Volendam will give you a few more sightseeing options, but staying on Marken means nature is right outside your door.

Popular Attractions Around Marken

Because of its small size, Marken is easily discovered in a weekend or during a short trip. It is the perfect place to rent a bike and cycle around as there are very few cars and everything is accessible by bike.

Marken is a great place to explore Dutch heritage; a lot of its architecture has stayed the same over the centuries, and much of the peninsula is still relatively untouched by man. You can either discover the peninsula yourself or hire a guide. A few sights you don’t want to miss include the clog factory and the church in the middle of town. Another great site is the lighthouse on the edge of the peninsula.

When you’re hungry you can walk to the beautiful marina and have some lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants there. The marina itself is a great place to hang around as there is always something happening. You’ll find some very pretty yachts and ships docked here. Close the the marina is also a store that sells traditional Dutch garb.

The most well-known museum in Marker is the (very imaginatively named) Marker Museum; located in the centre of town it displays the history of Marken. Although not an official museum, we’ll also count the Sijtje Boes ‘Kijkhuisje’ as one: sixty years ago Sijtje Boes opened up her house for tourists to see how people from Marken lived and it is still there – definitely worth a visit.

If you still have time left after discovering Marken, you could always go discover other cities. Volendam or Amsterdam for instance are only 20 minutes away and are great cities to visit for a day. Volendam in particular is easily accessible by both road and water, and is a very similar city to Marken in that it’s rich in Dutch heritage.

Hotel Facilities in Marken

The choice for hotels in and around Marken is quite impressive, especially if you also include Volendam. Each hotel has its own qualities and specifications, so make sure to pick a hotel that matches your preferences. Staying inside Marken or staying closer to Volendam makes a big difference. Either way, you’re in for a great holiday!
