If you’re used to USA standards. This hotel is not going to fit the bill the rooms are small barely enough space to open a checked bag. Yet costs quite a bit more than a few of the hotels 3/4 blocks away. I say keep looking. It was clean and had a calm lobby outside of check-in/ check-out hours.
The Chapter was the best hotel we stayed in during our two week stay in Japan. Great location as it’s centurally located.
Wonderful rooms and great staff!!
This property is right in the middle of downtown kyoto. It was about a 10 minute walk from most shopping and dining areas and a 2 minute walk to both the bus and metro stations for easy access to the tourist sites. No bell services outside but once checked in, the counter staff was more than happy to help with luggage. Our room was ready early so we were able to drop our small bags in the room before heading to our first late night temple. Dining and drinks were a little expensive for the area but right in line with USA standards. The room was cozy and well featured. Pajamas wete very comfy and i never wear hotel supplied pjs until this property. For the size of the room which was quite large for Japan, would expect area for clothing storage but there was none except for the hangers at the door.
Very beautiful hotel with great staff. Love the mix of traditional modern hotel.

Disliked: Staff & service
Not really a hotel more like a very fancy motel
No room service . No
facilities so cant even get water after restaurant shuts at 930
Looks nice but not much chop
Very slow check in and check out when being served
Check in and check out was incredibly slow for me. Even other customers were able to get checked in quicker as I waited. He went to all 3 computers on checkin and 2 computers at check out so clearly a system issue. I wonder if it was because it was a Hotels.com booking. My work colleague booked direct and was quicker.
The lack of cleaning labors was very obvious upon checking in. Even thought I arrived at 4pm the room was not ready. Several groups of visitors were waiting in the lobby for their rooms as well.
Then the 1st day of the stay the room was not cleaned when I returned at around 4pm. Had to call the front desk and make an appointment to clean at 6pm while I went out for dinner.
The 2nd day it got worse. The room was cleaned when I returned at 9pm but it was only half done. The bed I used was not made. The toilet was probably not cleaned (as the used roll of toilet papers did not fold to triangle as habited in Japan post-cleaning). The supplied USB cable was not returned to its storage. The trash can was cleaned out though but over all it left a very bad impression that the room was not cleaned whatsoever.
When I checked out after 3 nights and told the staff at the front desk about this, showing the photos. He looked disinterested, didn't even apologize. Instead he hasted to chase me for paying the city tax. It's hard to believe it's Japanese service.
Over all the hotel is new and has really good hardwares, but I guess Japan just lost too many skilled hotel labors during the 2 years of Covid. Maybe we all have to get used to the new service level. Good old days are gone.
Also note that even though the hotel is close to Ritz-Carlton, it gets very few taxis coming by. I strongly advise to walk a bit south to Hotel Okura where more taxis are coming by.
